Here is a crazy question. Knowing that the soho lasso images have not been working for over a day now, is it possible they have been damaged and are not currently functional rather than a cover up? A second question. Just like we have buoys as an early warning detection system for tsunamis do we have anything sensors in space comparable to the buoy to let us know if trouble is heading our way? If not why not? I really appreciate everyone input in advance. I love this thread!

SDO: The Solar Dynamics Observatory is the first mission to be launched for NASA's Living With a Star (LWS) Program, a program designed to understand the causes of solar variability and its impacts on Earth. SDO is designed to help us understand the Sun's influence on Earth and Near-Earth space by studying the solar atmosphere on small scales of space and time and in many wavelengths simultaneously.

SDO's goal is to understand, driving towards a predictive capability, the solar variations that influence life on Earth and humanity's technological systems by determining

how the Sun's magnetic field is generated and structured
how this stored magnetic energy is converted and released into the heliosphere and geospace in the form of solar wind, energetic particles, and variations in the solar irradiance.

Heliophysics is the study of the Sun and its interactions with Earth and the solar system. The Heliophysics science program consists of two strategic programs/mission lines: the Solar Terrestrial Probes and Living with a Star; one Principal Investigator- led competed line (the Explorers); and a set of Research programs including a fleet of operating missions known as the Heliophysics System Observatory. All play a part in the development of scientific understanding of the heliophysics system.

Living With a Star emphasizes the science necessary to understand those aspects of the Sun and space environment that most directly affect life and society. LWS missions target the linkages across the interconnected system with an ultimate goal of enabling a predictive understanding. The first LWS mission is the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which was launched early in 2010. This mission observes how the Sun’s magnetic field is generated and structured and stored magnetic energy is converted and released into the heliosphere in the form of solar wind, energetic particles, and variations in the solar irradiance. The second LWS mission will be the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP). The twin RBSP spacecraft will determine how charged particles in space near the Earth are accelerated to hazardous energies that affect satellites, astronaut safety, and high-altitude aircraft. Concurrently with RBSP, the Balloon Array for Radiation-belt Relativistic Electron Losses (BARREL) will measure the high-energy particle precipitation from the radiation belts into our Earth’s atmosphere. August has been a busy month for the Radiation Belt Storm Probes and the scientists and engineers preparing the twin RBSP spacecraft (A and B) for their 2012 launch. On August 3, NASA approved a new launch readiness date of August 15, 2012

Instruments scanning outer space for cataclysmic explosions called gamma-ray bursts are detecting intense flashes of gamma-ray energy right here in the friendly skies of Earth. These terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs, blast through thunderstorms close to the altitude where commercial airliners fly.

In fact, they could be too close for comfort.

In a recent study,* scientists estimated that airline passengers could be exposed to 400 chest X-rays worth of radiation by being near the origin of a single millisecond blast. Joe Dwyer of the Florida Institute of Technology took part in that research, which used observations from NASA's Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, or RHESSI, to estimate the danger TGFs pose. .............................................................​.......cont




GBM wasn't designed to look for TGFs, but GBM co-investigator Michael Briggs has greatly enhanced its sensitivity to them by writing new software.

"TGFs have really been an afterthought for missions so far," says Dwyer. RHESSI, for example, points at the sun, but the RHESSI team figured out a way to measure TGFs by detecting gamma-rays coming in through the satellite's backside. "All these instruments have been pointing across the universe, while right over our heads these monsters are going off!"

"Now the whole field of TGFs is on fire," says Fishman. "People are jumping on the bandwagon to try to figure them out."

High-energy bursts of gamma rays typically occur far out in space, perhaps near black holes or other high-energy cosmic phenomena. So imagine scientists' surprise in the mid-1990s when they found these powerful gamma ray flashes happening right here on Earth, in the skies overhead.

They're called Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes, or TGFs, and very little is known about them. They seem to have a connection with lightning, but TGFs themselves are something entirely different.

NASA Science Chief stepped down 2 days ago... He was in charge of the heliophysics division. He had been with NASA for 32 years... now gone. They have no replacement for him so the deputy chief is filling in. Interesting timing, no?

"They clearly record an electrical discharge like a lightning bolt flashing past, and I was snapping the pictures almost exactly . . . when the Columbia may have begun breaking up during re-entry."

The discharge is described as "a bright scraggly flash of orange light, tinged with pale purple, and shaped somewhat like a deformed L."

As the flash crossed the shuttle's contrail, it immediately became brighter and began to twist, as if the shuttle had started abruptly wobbling.

What do you think of the cme from the comet. A glancing blow for us.

Maybe Nin put this oon updates on beg of thread. I saw this but I'd like your thoughts.
