Hugh M Eye User ID: 3159895 United States 10/12/2011 04:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Surprisingly, the most active region on the solar disk is STILL un-numbered. Nine of the twelve flares today came from this NE equatorial region (N09E50 approximately). [link to www.lmsal.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1819063 United States 10/12/2011 06:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That could very well be a very very bad thing. If the entire surface of the sun flared at once and knocked the satellite offline for 7 hours....yipes. I hope someone who has a long history of watching the sun can explain this one. That looked like a mega flare to me. |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 3159895 United States 10/12/2011 09:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nothing to worry about...software or other type of glitch. This has been seen many times before. Although I can't tell you exactly what the cause is; I've found some info on various anomalies in the SOHO imaging. Before jumping to wild conclusions (ie:Nibiru, alien space fleets, brown dwarves, explosions of doom) I wish folks would use a little common sense and do a little Google research before posting alarming YouTube vids. No huge flares or CME's yesterday-Sol was well-behaved and extremely quiet. Though that may change soon. [link to www.badastronomy.com] [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 3159895 United States 10/12/2011 09:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The new hyper-active region has finally been dubbed AR11319. The other group of emerging spots near mid-disk also has a number now:AR11318. [link to sidc.oma.be] |

Yes, a still-useful, orbiting magnetospheric science observatory was shot down in a test of the ASAT anti-satellite weapons system. Multiply this stupidity and waste by ,oh, a trillion or two; and you'll get an inkling of why our country is broke (except for the unquenchable military/corruption budget). I follow Mr. Cometwatchs channel because he seems to be a sincere fellow. Thanks for the clarification. It just seemed odd because of the missing 7 hours of data, and you yourself have pointed out about NASA's inconsistancies about the link between comets crashing into the sun and CME's being produced. |

It just seemed odd because of the missing 7 hours of data, and you yourself have pointed out about NASA's inconsistancies about the link between comets crashing into the sun and CME's being produced. The long gaps of missing data from SOHO annoys me to no end. I've never heard a good reason for this and it seems to be happening a lot more lately than in the past. I guess it could be anything from aging equipment to incompetence to budget cutbacks. This problem comes up constantly and reflects poorly on NASA/NRL-I wish they would at least issue a public explanation. It obviously feeds into many conspiracy hypotheses and I, too, often question what they're up to. By the way, when SOHO is retarded you can check SDO, Stereo, Lockheed/Solarsoft or other sites to confirm the sun's activity. Here are some links I use (and links at the bottom of page @ Spaceweather.com are useful): [link to www.lmsal.com] [link to sidc.oma.be] [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] [link to www.spaceweather.com] If all these sites go dark for 7 hours, then start panic sex rituals, lol. |
