Does anyone have a guess at how hard a hit we are about to take and when? Should we try to protect our electronics and when? No matter how much I keep trying to learn what all these graphs mean, I just don't get some of it.

The CACTus (Computer-Aided CME Tracking) website shows 25 CMEs from 10/21-10/22; of course some were huge and others barely noticeable. It gets really confusing triangulating the data/imagery and then following the energies as they expand outward from the sun.

My hunch is the smaller CME is more Earth-directed (before the large one at North and the big-fast-blast which followed 10 hours later w/M-flare).

The NEW NOAA Enlil Solar Wind Prediction model has a "storm-mode" CME-based model. According to this model, NOAA expects geo-effectiveness to begin 20-24 hours from now. But with 25 CMEs and only one shown on model, it's anyone's guess what's going on.

COMET NEWS: NASA's Spitzer Space telescope spots "comet storm" in nearby solar system Eta Corvi. Said to resemble the "Late Heavy Bombardment" in our own system.

A new un-numbered region has come over the eastern limb. A fairly large spot at a very high latitude-I guesstimate almost 40 degrees N. Interesting.

Bz(nT) has been jumping back and forth from N to S to North again. I think this is good for Earth. NIN & Tom are the experts on this magnetic stuff.

Solar wind now decreased to 503.4 km/sec and Proton density down now to 2.7.

Are we still within "safe" levels though? I remember about a month ago, someone said the top left simulation here ... the 'tentacles' should be wrapped tightly when we are being hit. That we don't want to see them ummm spread out like this.

The initial wave was pretty weak and then faded-but now things are getting bumpy. If the big CME hit us straight on we may've been in a bit of trouble, but this is just the edge of the wave so we should be fine. There's really no way of knowing when a particular satellite may malfunction or if GPS will go off-until it happens.

Kp Index at Longyearbyen, Norway is at Storm level 6-everywhere else is at 4 or 5 right now.

With these consecutive images I think you can see the Inner Magnetosphere Lines snap out and capture Energy from the Outer Shell and then re-coiling back with the Inner Magnetosphere loaded as a result..

Its' strange that the Velocity of the Solar Wind is relatively Low..There must have been a fair bit of Energy in this Event/s.

Took quite a shock it seems. Spaceweather.com is reporting magnetic field compression all the way down to geo-synchronus orbit. Satellite TV may be a little fuzzy this evening,lol.

Yeah, I've never seen such a high storm level with this low SW velocity. I know there were several major CMEs, but none was directly in our face. This seems quite strong for a glancing blow. Here's the NOAA satellite environment plots:
