holy crap
i went to SDO to see if they have updated images yet
i saw that they finally a had updated image
so i clicked to see the movie of images for the 25th, expecting to see maybe 10 (they usually have around 89 for a full day
491 is how many images at on for the 25th!
i think they messed up and have all the images for the last 4-5 days all loaded for the 25th
its still loading hahaha

lolsign Haha....last week I had an email exchange w/an esa/nasa guy about the gaps in soho data. He gave me a laundry list of troubles. Some we're all familiar with (bake-outs, orbital adjustments, network outages, etc.) but basically I deduce it's mostly funding, staffing, & laziness in processing the images in timely fashion. I told him the whole heliophysics community is depending on Soho data. I've noticed since I complained Soho has been much better.
He did appear defensive, and seemed to insinuate that I was a tin-foil-hatter (I actually prefer lead foil, lol).
<"SOHO is a science mission and all the data is available to anyone. We have no intention to hide anything, we are scientists, we are trying to explore and discover, not to hide.">"
Funny thing is, I never said anything about "hiding" data; I just wanted to know what the actual cause of the gaps was "to debunk the conspiracy theories."

More filaments and images-besides the above-mentioned filament in the NE there seems to be an almost identical one in the NW quadrant (near 11324)--shaped like an upside-down fishing hook. Mauna Loa Observatory Helium I image:

STEREO Ahead shows a CME blast at 11-12:00 UTC-looks like it's coming our way. SOHO not updating.

[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Might be that filament in the northwest near 1324. Further investigation is needed.

G'day, NINz!hf

I did see a burp in that area on SDO composite images. You're so right about increased number of images-I tried to get a movie of 7 hour time-frame and it loaded more than a 150 images....took forever.

Here's a cool time-lapse video of yesterdays geomagnetic storm from the NICT magnetosphere simulation. Maybe you could embed video for me.

I finally saw them! The auroras were amazing. The weird thing is I checked spaceweather.com and the numbers seemed to show it was winding down. But then I went outside and the dim auroras became bright and the sky exploded in color. Here's some pictures I took:

This CME is much smaller than than last weeks but IMO it's gonna hit Earth more directly- of course a lot depends on the polarity. I have read recently that events near the western limb tend to be more geo-effective due to the Parker Spiral (seen on the models) which sweep the solar winds towards Earth.

SOHO is letting me down again-just when I thought they were picking up their game, lol. Latest updated movie from STEREO A:
[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

As for the Farside maps-they're Doppler magnetograms which show fluctuations in magnetic field strength. They sometimes appear scarier than they are. Here's a whole page of Farside maps-scroll down and see how they change.

Are we talking about something really big?
 Quoting: Shenue

i believe the thing we have learned from this last geomagnetic storm is, it does not take a HUGE CME to effect us greatly
none of us suspected that the kinda small filament ejection on the 22nd would have such an effect
for 2 reasons...
1. it did not look like it had a lot of mass to it, compared to many others we have see in recent times
and 2 because it was not in a direct hit direction

so most of us looked at this as a not to big CME that would maybe have a glancing blow
we see these glancing blow CME's a lot
most of the time they maybe stir up a Kp5 at most and do not have much effect
for sure nothing to write home about

this latest filament that sent a CME in our direction for a glancing blow, stirring up a Kp7 storm and red green auroras far south showed us that in this case anyways, it is not the size that counts.
We should therefore be on alert for any and all CME's headed in our direction, even is they look like they will only have a glancing blow
IMO
