Quoting: joinca ACE News #145 - December 5, 2011 The Return of Energetic 3He in the Inner Heliosphere [link to www.srl.caltech.edu] Also: The Sunspot Cycle (Updated 2011/11/02) [link to solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov] With this: The numbers tabulated in spot_num.txt are the monthly averages (SSN) and standard deviation (DEV) derived from the International Sunspot Numbers) [link to solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov] Thanks, Joinca, I got my first ACE email today and thought posting, but I got lazy. I guess you got subscribed to their news release, too. Great, though I find some of their stuff way over my head, LOL. Other interesting articles in their archive (cosmic rays, CME particle analysis, etc): [link to www.srl.caltech.edu] I'm not a big fan of the "official Sunspot Number". It's very confusing to the layman and I couldn't explain it to anyone w/o looking it up again. Invented in 1848 by Rudolf Wolf so he could impress his hung-over fellow astronomers. And then you get to bring up the old 10.7 cm flux radio emission which is rumored to be somewhat correlating to the SS #. Today's Sunspot Number is 185 and 10.7 cm flux is 164--not too close really. I only pay attention to the SS# when it gets near 200 or better--it's an indication of coming solar max. [link to spaceweather.com] [link to www.ips.gov.au] |

HOWEVER, here's another STEREO Beacon site that I usually use- the HI 1 data is there if you need it. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] A lot of these NASA missions have mirror sites in the UK or elsewhere. There's several SOHO/LASCO sites. Why they have different set of images is both baffling and maddening. |

That's funny you got a response faster from Dr. Strong on YouTube than you would from NASA, LOL. Let's all make a note of that, haha. Judging from that video I wouldn't be surprised if Dr. S was lurking on GLP SOLAR WATCH yesterday. |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 6595119 United States 12/06/2011 12:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I wrote to SOHO once and I got a thoughtful and prompt reply-but it was during the afternoon. I saw these proton graphs from STEREO A are really spiking. I think STEREO A got hit right in the face with the last big CME. The spike is peaking around the time of that weird image. If strong CMEs can scour material off the surface of Mercury, I imagine it could shred some insulation off of a spacecraft. It's a real testament to NASA's engineering that SOHO is still operating after 16 years--bombarded with all that radiation and God knows what else. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 6647581 United States 12/06/2011 02:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | UPDATE 12/06/11: There was another bright CME on the NW limb-not Earth-facing. :cme1206: The unpredictable sun which seemed to be increasing in both spots and flaring yesterday-has mysteriously pooped out and some spots are decaying rapidly. AR11361 is about to vanish over the NW limb; 1362 has weakened considerably since we first saw it: 1365 which mushroomed quickly is now disappearing: large active region 1363 has diminished slightly, but is still Earth-facing and capable of strong flares. 1364 is a single spot and appears stable. The region 1368 in the SE was spotless-produced 3 C-flares-grew spots yesterday-now has decayed to almost nothing again. Between it and the big one is 1367 which seems stable. A new region in the NW has been numbered 1369. Why? I don't know-it looks to me like a small part of region 1366 which may be the only growing region on the disk. Hugh M Eye User ID: 6683022 United States 12/07/2011 01:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SOLAR STORMS COULD "SANDBLAST" the MOON-NASA Scientists at NASA Goddard, as part of the Dynamic Response of the Environment At the Moon (DREAM) project, have announced that CMEs can significantly erode the lunar surface according to new computer simulations. A strong CME may contain a billion tons of plasma moving at a million miles per hour in a cloud many times the size of Earth. "The moon has just the barest wisp of an atmosphere, technically called an exosphere because it is so tenuous, which leaves it vulnerable to CME effects. The plasma from CMEs impacts the lunar surface, and atoms from the surface are ejected in a process called "sputtering." "We found that when this massive cloud of plasma strikes the moon, it acts like a sandblaster and easily removes volatile material from the surface," said William Farrell, DREAM team lead at NASA Goddard. "The model predicts 100 to 200 tons of lunar material – the equivalent of 10 dump truck loads – could be stripped off the lunar surface during the typical 2-day passage of a CME." This is the first time researchers have attempted to predict the effects of a CME on the moon. "Connecting various models together to mimic conditions during solar storms is a major goal of the DREAM project," says Farrell." In 2013, NASA plans to launch the Lunar Atmosphere And Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE). The orbiter will try to measure the dust and test their predictions from 12-30 miles above the lunar surface. Wow, just in time for solar maximum! No wonder STEREO A is having debris knocked off of it-I wonder how Messenger is holding up at Mercury? [link to www.nasa.gov] |

Usually we see the geomagnetic Ap Index increase with increasing sunspots and 10.7 cm radio flux. But the Ap index (the third graph below) has crashed to the third lowest level since January 2000, matching what it was a year ago. This is the second month of decline, and the decline is steep.
