SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

COMET LOVEJOY UPDATE: Matthew Knight of the Lowell Observatory and JHU-APL reports: "As of 16:30 UT on Dec. 15th, Comet Lovejoy has reached magnitude -3, possibly brighter. It is starting to saturate SOHO images even with narrow filters and shorter than normal exposure times." The comet is now brighter than Jupiter, but not quite as bright as Venus. If these developments continue apace, Comet Lovejoy could become visible to the naked eye in broad daylight before the end of Dec. 15th. Does anybody know what the 'big white dot' is on the latest Stereo Ahead HI1 images? Is it Comet Lovejoy or something else? The one creeping in on the left. would really appreciate an answer!

it says Venus is below the sun, so how can the 'dot' in the Stereo Ahead HI1 (below) be Venus too? Are the Stereo images flipped or something? I admit I'm a newbie! Just trying to learn :)

Well, i have to research now^^

I was wondering why that big white blob wasn't labeled myself. I believe it's pixel-overload from Jupiter which is just out of the frame (I guess that's why it isn't labeled). If you look at the planets for the HI2 imager we see that Jupiter is just behind Mercury and in front of Earth (from STEREO A's perspective). That's my best guess.

As far as the SOHO C3 images go, I believe the comets increased brightness distorts and enlarges its appearance as the pixels are saturated. To minimize this effect the spacecraft's controllers are frequently re-adjusting the aperture of the camera to compensate for the growing magnitude. It does create an interesting optical illusion. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

As Comet Lovejoy moves toward perihelion this evening we will point SDO a little to the left of the Sun to try and see the tail of the comet in our telescopes. This website will allow you to see those images and flip through them looking for the comet...:

New SOHO images should be coming in shortly. This will be a huge embarrassment for NASA if they screw this up after all the hype. Sigh....

it was working earlier for me but it's not working now so I'm guessing it's probably just a temporary glitch?

SOHO should be coming into contact right around now. We have 2hr pass which should be enough time to get a few realtime images
