its from a coronal hole (ch489)which was in earth facing position on dec 16,17

[link to www.youtube.com]

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled with a chance of active intervals on December 19 due to effects from CH489. Quiet to unsettled is likely on December 20 becoming quiet on December 21-22

Great job, Rain-Man! If you go to deluxe Cygnet Streamer it's a little easier to see where all the satellites and inner planets are--unfortunately they don't plot comets or asteroids. Sometimes it's hard to visualize in 3D from the SOHO/STEREO images; theoretically, if all three are giving us data we can triangulate all the particular events. I know you already know this, I'm just putting it out here for the casual reader of this thread. Again, kudos for a nice post!

Two new active regions are coming over the NE limb. There's a medium-size spot near the equator and a larger group of spots just becoming visible on the northeast limb.

Active regions 1381 & 1382 have grown significantly and we should see some intensified flaring soon. An X-ray image from Hinode:

More amazing images of Comet Lovejoy! the Solar Optical Telescope aboard the Hinode satellite also imaged Lovejoy-the 6th spacecraft to capture the historic event.

[link to sungrazer.nrl.navy.mil]

And the movies just get better--this awesome video from STEREO A EUVI shows Lovejoys tail being whipped about by the sun's coronal magnetic fields.

Movie: [link to sungrazer.nrl.navy.mil]

Gif animation: [link to sungrazer.nrl.navy.mil]

Comments from the Sungrazer website:

I'll hold while you hit play a few times...

Not bad, huh?! So what's going on there then??! Well clearly we see the tail wiggling again but this time it looks like the entire comet is dancing about in and out of the corona! Of course it's not -- that's an optical illusion facilitated by the way the tail is moving around. If you were to plot the comet head positions you would see they follow a perfect smooth curve. That tail does not though! What seems to be happening -- and this is my very preliminary reaction that could be as accurate as my Lovejoy-will-never-survive prediction -- is that the charge-free dust in the comet tail is being rapidly charged as it leave the comet and is basically "clinging" to, or certainly interacting with, magnetic field lines in the corona... somehow. Throw in some Fairy-dust and there's your explanation!

if lovejoy has lost it`s tail in the close encounter i imagine that confirms :

lovejoy destabilized upon approach, thus formed tail, then stabilized once close encounter too place
it`s charge stabilized because it is the same nature as our suns thus it leaves with no destabilized effects (tail)

or is that to simple ???
 Quoting: aether

Tail is growing back :)

[link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]
superman

I wonder what this tail is made of? hmm
 Quoting: Anti-GLP Effect

Thread: Comet Lovejoy survives perihelion! (Page 10)

okay what is that telling us
there is a close proximity zone of charge equilibrium as in:
both stable
or
so fucking hot up close tail vaporizes

feels like vaporize
a vaporize zone for the tail seems most likely
comet remains destabilized but not sufficiently to cause break up
and the f... never melted LOL
love it
 Quoting: aether

it still leaves the question of where the tail went as it got close to the corona. Since the shape of the coma and tail is dictated by electric fields, is it possible that the tail actually remained but just took on a different shape that we don't recognise as a tail? And could this tell us any more about the electrical environment of the corona or fields near to the Sun's surface?
 Quoting: observation

good point
so what i am seeing that tells me evaporation as in disappears cause by sun effect on comet
okay same visuals different words
the effect of our sun at close encounter caused the comet tail to become invisible as in it altered lovejoys electric field and switched the tail effect of
yes
our suns e field overwhelmed lovejoys e field at close proximity

We finally had another C-flare after 43 hours of low activity. According to Solarsoft 1381 produced a C1.5 flare. However, their flare-locater image appears to show region 1382. I think these two regions are like siamese twins with intertwining magnetic fields.

2012 may begin with some possible DOOM (man-made, of course). The Russian Mars space probe (FAIL!) Phobos-Grunt weighing some 14 tons will break up and rain debris onto Earth. Potential doom from radioactive Cobalt-57 isotopes on board (as well as 12 tons of toxic fuel) is being downplayed (natch) by Roscocosmos and the media. It should at least produce a nifty light show somewhere.
[link to www.mirror.co.uk]

A 2012 supernova-doom scenario is being discounted by scientists. A lethal Gamma Ray Burst, however, can't be entirely ruled out. C'mon Doomtards, astronomers are running out of 2012 theories to debunk.

MILKY WAY'S MAGNETIC FIELD MAPPED WITH HIGHEST PRECISION-Space Daily

map:
[link to www.mpa-garching.mpg.de]

With a unique new all-sky map, scientists at MPA have made significant progress toward measuring the magnetic field structure of the Milky Way in unprecedented detail. Specifically, the map is of a quantity known as Faraday depth, which among other things, depends strongly on the magnetic fields along a particular line of sight. To produce the map, data were combined from more than 41,000 individual measurements using a novel image reconstruction technique.

rest of story here:
[link to www.spacedaily.com]

The magnetic fields investigation is getting bigger all the time. Next they want to map the EXTRA-galactic magnetic fields.

Looks like the sun is about to unleash a cme
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2159872

Nice catch, AC872! This is a strange CME as I cannot find a reason for it. There was a LDE B9.8 flare from 1376 at the time as well as an eruption on the limb from 1374; but I can't determine if these had anything to do with the CME. As usual, we'll have to wait for SOHO to fill in the crucial 8-hour data gap. The CME looks both substantial and possibly Earth-directed going by the STEREO A+B images. Santa Claus could have some auroras to guide his sleigh this year.

The X-ray background level is on the upswing with AR11376 seeing the most flare activity.
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

[link to www.lmsal.com]

[link to www.solarmonitor.org]

A large new active region (1384?) has come over the NE limb and it looks like it could produce significant flares.
:ar1384:

[link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]

At the time of the CME there was 3 simultaneous events going on! I can't say where the CME erupted for sure but I'm leaning towards a filament prominence on the SW limb. However it appears from the STEREO images it may have been in the northern hemisphere, so confusion remains. At exactly the same time as a B9.8 flare from 1376 there was a strong (unrecorded?) flare from 1375 beyond the NW limb; AND a large prominence eruption near 1374 on the SW limb. Perhaps all these far-flung events are connected?
:flare1375:
:ejecta1374:

All three events can be seen in the same SDO/AIA 304a picture:
