CME eruption seen on SOHO cor 2. Not sure exactly what happened but it may be related to a filament eruption on the western limb. Seeking more info....

SIDC - RWC BELGIUM 02 Jan 2012, 1204UT

Solar activity is expected to be eruptive within the next 24 hours, with high chances for C-flares, and a slight chance for an M-flare. The main region producing flares is NOAA AR 11389, which has produced a few C flares in the past 24 hours. The partial halo CME detected first by LASCO C2 on January 1, 13:36 UT was a backsided event, and is not expected to be geo-effective. Geomagnetic conditions are expected to remain mostly quiet during the coming days, with possible effects from a coronal hole high speed wind stream.

Sunspots today and the increasing Region 1389


Region 1384 rotated over the north-east limb yesterday and also Region 1390 decayed and disappeared

So only three regions remain, the largest is 1389 at 420 millionths and is a FKO type group

The other two regions are H type groups now

Over recent hours a multi-spot region as emerged in the northern hemisphere

There is also a region looks like it could rotate over the north-east limb very soon

A sudden ionospheric disturbance (SID) is an abnormally high ionization/plasma density in the D region of the ionosphere caused by a solar flare. The SID results in a sudden increase in radio-wave absorption that is most severe in the upper medium frequency (MF) and lower high frequency (HF) ranges, and as a result often interrupts or interferes with telecommunications systems.

Researchers found that almost all of the earthquakes down to a depth of about 35km were preceded by distinct electrical disturbances in the ionosphere..



The sudden inosperic disturbance was related to a tenflare

Tenflare - A tenflare is associated with optical and x-ray flares. Solar flares emit radiation over a very wide range of frequencies. One of the more significant frequencies observed is the 10.7 cm wavelength band (2695 MHz). When a solar flare erupts, "noise" from the flare is received over this very wide range of frequencies.

When the noise received on the 10.7 cm wavelength band surpasses 100% of the background noise level during a solar flare, a Tenflare is said to be in progress. The more intense solar flares are associated with tenflares. Almost all major flares are associated with tenflares.

Generally, the greater the intensity of the burst of noise observed at the 10.7 cm wavelength band, the more significant the flare is said to be. The duration of the tenflare can also be used to determine the severity of the flare.


If we reach SolarMaximum this will happen a bit more...

How can we tell?

Solarmax info:
The Sun has a natural cycle with a period of approximately 11 years. During the lifetime of each cycle, the magnetic field lines of the Sun are dragged around the solar body by differential rotation at the solar equator.
This means that the equator is spinning faster than the magnetic poles. As this continues, solar plasma drags the magnetic field lines around the Sun, causing stress and a build up of energy.
As magnetic energy increases, kinks in the magnetic flux form, forcing them to the surface. These kinks are known as coronal loops which become more numerous during periods of high solar activity

This is where the sunspots come in. As coronal loops continue to pop up over the surface, sunspots appear too, often located at the loop footpoints. Coronal loops have the effect of pushing the hotter surface layers of the Sun (the photosphere and chromosphere) aside, exposing the cooler convection zone (the reasons why the solar surface and atmosphere is hotter than the solar interior is down to the coronal heating phenomenon).
As magnetic energy builds up, we can expect more and more magnetic flux to be forced together. This is when a phenomenon known as magnetic reconnection occurs.
Reconnection is the trigger for solar flares of various sizes.
(this is just one thing we watch for on SDO images for signs of large flares about to occure)

The solar storm works in approximately an 11 year cycle. There is solar minimum (the least amount of solar storm) and solar maximum (the greatest amount).
The last solar cycle 23 had a solar minumus in 1996. the solar maximum for solar cycle 23 was in 2001 (5 years later)
the last solar minimus was in 2006. The next solar max is predicted for 2012 (6 years later)

Coronal Holes at solarmax
At the solar minimum, coronal holes are found mainly at the Sun's polar regions, but can be located anywhere on the sun during solar maximum

Sunspots at solarmax
The number of sunspots and their proximity to the equator of the sun increases as the sunspot cycle progresses toward maximum.

here is a documentary that i watched with my family and they said it helped them to understand a LOT better about what the sun does and how it effects the earth.
