El Quisqueyano User ID: 9148797 United States 01/23/2012 07:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i just went to check this weeks weather, and there it is the #4 story on weather.com Quoting: NiNzrez Strongest Solar Storm Since 2005 Hitting Earth by weather.com and The Associated Press [link to www.weather.com] they actually put a bit of time into that article nice load of info in one place Excerpt for future reference; A solar eruption is followed by a one-two-three punch, said Antti Pulkkinen, a physicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and Catholic University. First comes electromagnetic radiation, followed by radiation in the form of protons. Then, finally the coronal mass ejection - that's the plasma from the sun itself - hits. Usually that travels at about 1 or 2 million miles per hour, but this storm is particularly speedy and is shooting out at 4 million miles per hour, Biesecker said. |

Was that true for previous CME impacts? |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 9433941 United States 01/23/2012 07:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Solar Storm Threat Analysis-a easy to read, yet thorough overview of Solar Particle Events' effects on Earth and infrastructure. Besides insights into power grids, etc., the author (James Marusek) had this to say about LEO satellite risks: " A high-energy particle from an SPE can penetrate the wall of a satellite and deposit sufficient charge to cause an electrical upset to a circuit switch, false command, memory state change or loss. As the nuclear particles collide within the spacecraft, they release electrons that build up an internal dielectric charge. This static charge can destroy circuitry on electronic boards. The particles can also change data and instructions stored in computer memory. Some of the memory damage is soft causing Single Event Upset (SEU). Generally, this anomaly can be corrected by a computer reboot. But some of the damage can be hard causing unrepairable physical damage to the junction of the microcircuit. These types of failures can be fatal." [link to www.breadandbutterscience.com] From what I can tell from my limited research, the GOES electron flux detector suffered one of these temporary upsets due to the accumulated charge of 24-hour magnetic storm and not from the proton event. Of course the proton event may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. It looks like they got it to re-boot (maybe). [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Another good read on the Earth effects of extreme solar storms here: [link to www.solarstorms.org] Photo of fried transformer from 1989's mag-storm from New Jersey's Salem Nuclear plant. These transformers are as big as a house, cost over $10 million apiece, and take up to a year to replace under good conditions. Hundreds of these babies could be at risk in an extreme ground-current event. [link to science.nasa.gov] |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 9433941 United States 01/23/2012 08:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yah, dat me, Alien I be... Quoting: JustOneGuy Sorry all; ex-military, accustomed to formatting EAM messages thus...becomes habitual, like breathing. Seriously though, the question remains. Anyone thought about it? There's a lot of high-falootin' physics papers to wade through here in cyber-space (and lots of 'em ya gotta pay for). Anyway, after much research I've determined the answer is.....wait for it....... .......YES. Yes there have been observations of these in the past. Evidently, this is a very complicated circumstance that is dependent on the angles of the CMEs/flares, their velocities, and the latitude of their respective origins. In the scenario you suggest, we would see an intensifying effect of the solar energetic particles. Also, as El Q seemed to suggest, the coronal hole may also have an effect on CMEs and SEPs. I'm no physicist so my knowledge is quite limited in this....but there's lots of difficult-to-read heliophysics research on this stuff out there. Here's one: "The intensity variation due to CME interaction reported in [1] is confirmed by expanding the investigation to all the large SEP events of solar cycle 23. The large SEP events are separated into two groups, one associated with CMEs running into other CMEs, and the other with CMEs running into the ambient solar wind. SEP events with CME interaction generally have a higher intensity. New possibilities such as the influence of coronal holes on the SEP intensity are also discussed. For example, the presence of a large coronal hole between a well-connected eruption and the solar disk center may render the shock poorly connected because of the interaction between the CME and the coronal hole. This point is illustrated using the 2004 December 3 SEP event delayed by about 12 hours from the onset of the associated CME. There is no other event at the Sun that can be associated with the SEP onset. This event is consistent with the possibility that the coronal hole interaction influences the connectivity of the CMEs that produce SEPs, and hence the intensity of the SEP event."
