The magnetesphere did not look good. Is it from the X flare?

I know it's not that big of a deal, but damn, I'm glad that wasn't completely earth facing.

Do you have an estimate of what the size of the flare would have been if it was?

well, tom and i talked about that some
hard to say really
but it sure would have been very high
personaly i believe higher than a X20
this, mainly because of the size of 1402 combined with the event this flare created while on the far western limb
i suggest to keep an eye on the ACE data and/or nict to see if the Bz flips and goes in the - negative
if it does, we could see a geomagnetic storm out of this
but as it is right now, the nict looks the way it does because of the winds combined with the density
it's not to bad right now

What does this darkness represent? Is it something that is actually in space or is the camera and image processing interpreting something and showing it as dark patches?

Wow I don't know if it will last, but today after sending Trin the e-mail I am able to get back online. Microsoft says it's a problem with the web page.

The sun has been hot and active as of late. The cme last night, was only a glancing blow.

Please no X 40's earth directed. Where it's hard to get the actual numbers for what really happens anyway, that would be a worldwide emp for sure. The Carrington event actually had reported railroad ties blowing up. I have more to do here. :)

I didn't have any big ill effects from the cme as is the case when it's long lasting and strong.

NASA'a THEMIS mission collaborates with NOAA's GOES and POES satellites to study the mysterious behavior of the Van Allen Radiation Belts and its response to solar activity.

"...the study of particle losses in the belts has so far provided more mystery and potential theories than concrete information. But understanding the radiation belts - and how they change as particles and energy come in or go out - is a crucial part of protecting satellites that fly through the region.

The Van Allen belts fit into a larger system that stretches from the sun to Earth. The sun sends out a constant stream of solar wind, not to mention occasional much larger bursts - such as explosions from the sun's atmosphere called coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or shock fronts caused by fast solar winds overtaking slower winds called corotating interaction regions (CIRs).

When these bursts of energy move toward Earth, they can disturb Earth's own magnetic environment, known as the magnetosphere, and create a geomagnetic storm. Sometimes these storms can cause a sudden drop in the radiation belt particles, seemingly emptying the belt in only a few hours. This "drop out" can last for days. What causes the drop out, why it lasts so long, and just how the particles even leave remain unanswered questions."

In related news, two THEMIS craft have been re-purposed to study the Moon's interactions with the Sun. The new project is dubbed ARTEMIS ( Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, Electrodynamics and the Moon's Interaction with the Sun)--what a mouthful,no wonder they abbreviate, lol.

According to NASA,"The ARTEMIS mission uses two of the five in-orbit spacecraft from another NASA Heliophysics constellation of satellites (THEMIS) that were launched in 2007 and successfully completed their mission earlier in 2010. The ARTEMIS mission allowed NASA to repurpose two in-orbit spacecraft to extend their useful science mission, saving tens of millions of taxpayer dollars instead of building and launching new spacecraft."

NASA is always thinking of the taxpayers.

A partial filament lift-off in the southwest has produced a modest CME. Almost 3/4 of the filament seems to remain so further eruptions are possible.

Significant earthquake precursor signal detected on 01/31/12 at 0159utc/2059est. Possible 6+.

Radio Direction Finder has signal coming in East of France from somewhere out in the Northern, Mid to Southern portions of the Pacific plate to Alaska, Canada and Chile.


All who live anywhere in the vicinity of this line trajectory should be wary next 5 hours. Have escape plan ready and seek open terrain in the event of felt tremor. Secure most of your heavy objects and belongings around your home.
