These three still H-alpha pics show the metamorphosis of the filament in the NE over a 12-hour period. 12:00utc: [ link to halpha.nso.edu] 18:00 utc: [ link to halpha.nso.edu] 00:30 utc: [ link to halpha.nso.edu] At first, it seems like a fat blob and then it stretches out--more than doubling in length. Most of the original blob lifts off producing CME; however, the stretched-out part seems to snap around almost to mid-disk. How stable this filament is now, we'll just have to wait and see. Quoting: Hugh M Eye As I expected! Thank you for the Links..the Last One: [ link to halpha.nso.edu] Tip your Screen back and you will notice that the Large Filament on the Bottom-Left of the Disc has now joined with all the others running up the Middle to the Filaments at the Top Left! Incredible! There must be some seriously powerful stored Magnetic Fields within that Lower Filament for it to have now drawn in all the others on the Left of the Disc! Sheesh!? Quoting: Spittin'Cesium this will be happening more and more as magnetic fields become unstable this happens as solar max arrives at solar max the north and south magnetic fields of the sun reverse (as most of you already know^^) so we need to keep this in mind when looking at magnetics on the sun there will be more and more magnetic charges we see in the coming times! it is amazing to be able to watch this with SDO! we also need to remember that SDO is fairly NEW it was not around at the last solar max in 2001-2003 so many of the images we get to see on SDO are new to not only us, but also the solar community in a whole :)
