We're fortunate these CMEs aren't directed at Earth; as they look extremely large and energetic. The most recent SDO composite images show huge, gaping scar-like tracks left by the filament's eruption. [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] SOHO Cor 3 image of first-wave: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] whoa not a 2nd wave a destabilization the southern base of this filament has destabelized the solar surface and caused a solar tsunami and a CME Hi, NIN! This eruption appears to have ripped open a coronal hole about 25 degrees north latitude. I've never witnessed anything like this before. Before: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] After: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] And in the 3-wave composite. Before: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] After: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] What do you make of that!? we have seen solar tsunamis before and they look like this as they are ongoing we have to wait for a few more hours of data images to come in before we can see the end result i might have to sleep soon so will more than likley update on this in the morning Join Me On The GLP SOLAR WATCH Thread Thread: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! Also won't that new coronal hole that just formed buffet us with a solar wind stream? If so aren't those alot slower than CMEs? |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 11337318 United States 02/24/2012 01:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Quoting: Starwind That big filament on the front side isn't looking better at all. Also won't that new coronal hole that just formed buffet us with a solar wind stream? If so aren't those alot slower than CMEs? Filaments can remain stable for weeks and large ones like that one in the southern hemisphere would probably come off in several chunks. It would be mind-boggling if it erupted all at once. We'll have to keep an eye on it, though. More on Filaments: [link to solar.physics.montana.edu] Sorry I didn't get to answer your question on Hyder flares. Hyder flares or two-ribbon channel flares can sometimes be caused by filament channel eruptions. They'll usually produce a spike in the X-ray flux and are visible in the H-alpha images. There's no way of predicting when they will occur. More on Hyder flares: [link to www.ips.gov.au] The new coronal hole may be a temporary result of the tsunami eruption. As NIN said, we'll have to wait for the dust to clear to analyze the results of all this. If it remains open we'll see a high-speed solar wind stream in about 3 or 4 days. Goodnight all. Hugh M Eye User ID: 11337318 United States 02/24/2012 09:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SIDC Daily Bulletin-- The CME was first seen in LASCO C2 at 3:42 UT. It is a full halo CME (including the shock) and is expected to be geoeffective. The CME is nicely visible in COR2-B data as well where we derived a speed of around 500 km/s. SDO/AIA images show that this CME is the result from a large filament located in the north-eastern hemisphere, that erupted late on the 23rd. Dimmings and nice post-eruptive loops are visible. We expect geomagnetic active to minor storm conditions on Monday 27/2 when the arrival of the CME is expected. [link to sidc.oma.be] |

We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity SDF Number 055 Issued at 2200Z on 24 Feb 2012 IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 23/2100Z to 24/2100Z: Solar activity was very low. An asymmetrical, halo CME was observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 24/0346Z. The associated event was a filament eruption centered near N32E38 which was observed in SDO/AIA 304 imagery beginning at 24/0225Z. New Region 1424 (N09E68) rotated on the East limb and was numbered. IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (25 - 27 February). IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 23/2100Z to 24/2100Z: The geomagnetic field was mostly quiet. Solar wind speeds at the ACE spacecraft ranged from approximately 400 - 460 km/s while the Bz component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field did not vary much beyond +/- 5 nT. IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly quiet on days 1 and 2 (25 - 26 February). A glancing blow from todays CME is expected to become geoeffective early on day 3 (27 February) causing unsettled to active periods with isolated minor storm periods possible.
