[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Last time we saw M8 flare and an X-flare. We haven't even had a C-flare recently! Poor Doc is losing his mind from all the Aluminum in his crust (note correct spelling!). [link to www.merriam-webster.com] Those weren't flares, they were filament channel eruptions; and they weren't "tiny" events, they were mega-huge events (at least the first one). Oh, I guess he didn't hear about the Earth-directed CME yet. At least he confirms, sort-of, that the protons are coming from the source of the CME eruption. I thought for sure the Klingons had proton torpedoes, LOL. |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 11428753 United States 02/25/2012 03:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Another large filament has erupted, this time in the NE quadrant. A chunk of it lifted off north and has produced a CME. What's really strange is the southernmost piece seems to have moved many thousands of kilometers towards disk-center. This eruption may still be in progress. Quoting: Hugh M Eye SOHO Cor 2 image of most recent CME: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] Big Bear Observatory shows the mysterious movements of the filament. [link to halpha.nso.edu] So far as I can tell none of these CMEs are Earth-directed, but this may change if the center-disk filament flies off of the Sun. Stay tuned.... Forgive me for quoting my own post from the 23rd, but I've finally found a movie which zooms in on that slithering snake-like filament described above. This is immediately prior to the big eruption & tsunami which sent the CME our way. I'm still amazed at the rapid movement, 90 degree turns, and the long distances covered. Anonymous Coward User ID: 11198416 Germany 02/25/2012 05:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SDF Number 056 Issued at 2200Z on 25 Feb 2012 Umbral separation was observed in Region 1422 (N15W78). Slight decay was observed in the trailing spots of Region 1424 (N08E52). The rest of the spot groups were relatively quiet and stable. A filament eruption on the SE limb was observed in SDO/AIA 304 imagery beginning at 24/1911Z. A corresponding CME off the SE limb was observed in LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 24/1948Z. The CME is not expected to be geoeffective. IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (26 - 28 February). A greater than 10 MeV proton enhancement began at approximately 25/0330Z and reached a maximum of 3 pfu at 25/1830Z and continued to be enhanced by the end of the reporting period. The event did not reach event threshold and likely originated from a backside event. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly quiet on day 1 (26 February). Early on day 2 (27 February), unsettled to active conditions are expected with minor storm periods possible due to the expected arrival of the 24 February CME. Conditions are expected to calm to quiet to unsettled levels with active periods possible by day 3 (28 February). [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] mhh okay.. |

There have been rare proton events from far-side eruptions, but I'm not buying it in this case. As you pointed out earlier, there was some activity beyond the east limb, but the only CME we saw was long after the proton event began; and we've seen no major x-rays leaking over the limb. I still think this is related to one of the two big channel eruptions somehow. I enjoy the fact that so many strange and mysterious things happen in connection with the sun that NOAA, NASA, and SIDC often contradict each other. Sometimes I think they just make shit up, LOL. |

The emission of gamma rays does not alter the number of protons or neutrons in the nucleus but instead has the effect of moving the nucleus from a higher to a lower energy state (unstable to stable). Gamma ray emission frequently follows beta decay, alpha decay, and other nuclear decay processes. [link to www.ndt-ed.org] Are TGFs Hazardous to Air Travelers? February 10, 2010: Instruments scanning outer space for cataclysmic explosions called gamma-ray bursts are detecting intense flashes of gamma-ray energy right here in the friendly skies of Earth. These terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs, blast through thunderstorms close to the altitude where commercial airliners fly. Quoting: observationIn fact, they could be too close for comfort. ........................... ..............."TGFs have really been an afterthought for missions so far," says Dwyer. RHESSI, for example, points at the sun, but the RHESSI team figured out a way to measure TGFs by detecting gamma-rays coming in through the satellite's backside. "All these instruments have been pointing across the universe, while right over our heads these monsters are going off!" "Now the whole field of TGFs is on fire," says Fishman. "People are jumping on the bandwagon to try to figure them out." [link to science.nasa.gov] is this the source of our higher proton counts ? Last Edited by aether on 02/26/2012 11:14 AM |
