Protons again!

Lets see if they manage to exceed that last crazy Proton Event that lasted Days earlier this Year!

That was intense.

The Electron Flux has been strange also of late.

This must be coming from the Great Filament Tsunami of 2012....or else there's something I'm not aware of.

Those weren't flares, they were filament channel eruptions; and they weren't "tiny" events, they were mega-huge events (at least the first one). Oh, I guess he didn't hear about the Earth-directed CME yet. At least he confirms, sort-of, that the protons are coming from the source of the CME eruption. I thought for sure the Klingons had proton torpedoes, LOL.

Another large filament has erupted, this time in the NE quadrant. A chunk of it lifted off north and has produced a CME. What's really strange is the southernmost piece seems to have moved many thousands of kilometers towards disk-center. This eruption may still be in progress.

SOHO Cor 2 image of most recent CME:

[link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]

Big Bear Observatory shows the mysterious movements of the filament.

[link to halpha.nso.edu]

So far as I can tell none of these CMEs are Earth-directed, but this may change if the center-disk filament flies off of the Sun. Stay tuned....

Forgive me for quoting my own post from the 23rd, but I've finally found a movie which zooms in on that slithering snake-like filament described above. This is immediately prior to the big eruption & tsunami which sent the CME our way. I'm still amazed at the rapid movement, 90 degree turns, and the long distances covered.

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 056 Issued at 2200Z on 25 Feb 2012

Umbral separation was
observed in Region 1422 (N15W78). Slight decay was observed in the
trailing spots of Region 1424 (N08E52). The rest of the spot groups
were relatively quiet and stable. A filament eruption on the SE
limb was observed in SDO/AIA 304 imagery beginning at 24/1911Z. A
corresponding CME off the SE limb was observed in LASCO C2 imagery
beginning at 24/1948Z. The CME is not expected to be geoeffective.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very
low with a chance for C-class activity for the next three days (26 -
28 February).

A greater than
10 MeV proton enhancement
began at approximately 25/0330Z and
reached a maximum of 3 pfu at 25/1830Z and continued to be enhanced
by the end of the reporting period. The event did not reach event
threshold and likely originated from a backside event.

Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be mostly quiet on day 1 (26 February). Early on day 2
(27 February), unsettled to active conditions are expected with
minor storm periods possible due to the expected arrival of the 24
February CME. Conditions are expected to calm to quiet to unsettled
levels with active periods possible by day 3 (28 February).

That's interesting. There have been rare proton events from far-side eruptions, but I'm not buying it in this case. As you pointed out earlier, there was some activity beyond the east limb, but the only CME we saw was long after the proton event began; and we've seen no major x-rays leaking over the limb. I still think this is related to one of the two big channel eruptions somehow. I enjoy the fact that so many strange and mysterious things happen in connection with the sun that NOAA, NASA, and SIDC often contradict each other. Sometimes I think they just make shit up, LOL.

for those that might have missed this, the CME arrival time was bumped up from the 27th, to the 26th

CME TARGETS EARTH, MARS: A coronal mass ejection (CME) launched from the sun on Feb. 24th appears set to hit both Earth and Mars. According to analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the cloud should reach Earth today, Feb. 26th around 1330 UT, followed by Mars two days later. Click to view the CME's animated forecast track
[link to spaceweather.com]

right now it is 05:02 UTC
so this CME is expected in about 8-9 hours

so, the protons started to rise right around the very end of the 24th, beginning of the 25th (UTC)
protonfeb
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

protonfeb25
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

so i go look at STEREO

STEREO A, there is no data Feb 24th, 21:54:24 UT- Feb 25th, 05:09:35 UT

we have this image at 21:54:24 UT on the 24th where we see a southern CME (7 hour data gap)
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
and the next image at 05:09 UTC Feb 25th (7hrs later) showing no events
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]

STEREO B, there is no data Feb 24th 23:54:24 UT - Feb 25th 01:54:24 UT (2 hour data gap)

on Feb 24th 23:54 UTC, we have this image where we can see there was a CME in the southern region
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
and the next image at 01:54 UTC Feb 25th (2hrs later) showing the remains of a CME
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]

this southern CME occured at around the same time we see the protons start to rise
so, we would have to conclude that this proton event is not from any backside event (we dont even see a backside CME on STEREO)
but as a direct result of this southern CME that occured starting around 20:39 UTC on Feb 24th

Gamma Radiation

Gamma-rays
A nucleus which is in an excited state may emit one or more photons (packets of electromagnetic radiation) of discrete energies. The emission of gamma rays does not alter the number of protons or neutrons in the nucleus but instead has the effect of moving the nucleus from a higher to a lower energy state (unstable to stable). Gamma ray emission frequently follows beta decay, alpha decay, and other nuclear decay processes.

Are TGFs Hazardous to Air Travelers?
February 10, 2010:

Instruments scanning outer space for cataclysmic explosions called gamma-ray bursts are detecting intense flashes of gamma-ray energy right here in the friendly skies of Earth. These terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs, blast through thunderstorms close to the altitude where commercial airliners fly.

In fact, they could be too close for comfort. ...........................

..............."TGFs have really been an afterthought for missions so far," says Dwyer. RHESSI, for example, points at the sun, but the RHESSI team figured out a way to measure TGFs by detecting gamma-rays coming in through the satellite's backside. "All these instruments have been pointing across the universe, while right over our heads these monsters are going off!"

"Now the whole field of TGFs is on fire," says Fishman. "People are jumping on the bandwagon to try to figure them out."
