so.. if the solar wind and the Earths magnetic field are both positive polarity we have nothing to worry about.
are they both positive?
TIA
Quoting: RTS REDUX Howdy, RTS . Yes, usually like polarities repel each other. When the Bz field element goes south we have the best chance for ground currents and aurorae. However, recent discoveries prove this is not always the case. "The size of the breach took researchers by surprise. "We've seen things like this before," says Raeder, "but never on such a large scale. The entire day-side of the magnetosphere was open to the solar wind." The circumstances were even more surprising. Space physicists have long believed that holes in Earth's magnetosphere open only in response to solar magnetic fields that point south. The great breach of June 2007, however, opened in response to a solar magnetic field that pointed north."To the lay person, this may sound like a quibble, but to a space physicist, it is almost seismic," says Sibeck. "When I tell my colleagues, most react with skepticism, as if I'm trying to convince them that the sun rises in the west."" Is there a way to determine if they are the same polarity? I only ask because the ieee didn't mention the 2008 finding Quoting: RTS REDUX Really we can only make an educated guess before the event. Usually, the ACE satellite provides the IMF (Interplanetary magnetic Field) data just ahead of Earth-impact. As we've seen in many other events, the mag-field can flip-flop more than Mitt Romney. Usually we don't know what's comin' 'til it's here, and I only posted the above to show that even a "friendly" north-oriented field can still produce strong geo-effects. The ACE SW-MAG data is the best way to determine polarity in reaL-time situations. Top line of graph shows us polarity: [ link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Quoting: Hugh M Eye Thanks! it looks like BT and BZ are both positive right now
