Second Biggest Flare Of the Solar Cycle Mar 08, 2012

This movie of the March 6, 2012 X5.4 flare was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 171 Angstrom wavelength. One of the most dramatic features is the way the entire surface of the sun seems to ripple with the force of the eruption. This movement comes from something called EIT waves -

[...]Since SDO captures images every 12 seconds, it has been able to map the full evolution of these waves and confirm that they can travel across the full breadth of the sun. The waves move at over a million miles per hour, zipping from one side of the sun to the other in about an hour.

im calling... a Kp8 reaching into a Kp9 for a bit

i try to stay away from posting anything i see that is very doomie
but, i feel a bit doomie with this one
there are a lot of red flags with this event
the crappy thing with this sun stuff
and us knowing the new carrington is unavoidable, and will happen
is, that even if/when we see all the signs...
it would be like every other event with that damn sun
being that we would not know for sure, untill it happens

so, if this one turns out to be the biggie we all look for that we know is coming one day

I thought I would throw a few positives in there for some of you.

The best side of the Earth to be on when this hits is the far side from the Sun. + 1 for those of us here in the states.

Because it is night the power consumption is also lower on the power grid.

It is neither the middle of Winter or the height of Summer so this lessens the grids load, and if there are any outages we won't suffer as badly.

Isn't there a planetary alignment coming up? Noticed a full moon tonight as well. Possible that this incoming CME and the other aforementioned factors could increase the likelihood of major seismic activity in the coming days?

I was thinking the same thing earlier. If it has to happen..at least it isn't in the dead of winter ( not that this winter was very cold) or the middle of summer when its so unbearable hot.

Yes there is. You are spot on. Nin amd I had been looking at this alignment and we were actually expecting this large flare and CME in corelation with it. I don't want to say to much more about it as I think Nin would love to answer this for you. I am sure when she sees this she will be happy to expound on the answer to your question. I hope I haven't let the cat out of the bag!

Do x-class flares tend to always produce CME's? Have there ever been x-class flares and no associated CME's?

This stillness on all fields, xray, proton, msphere, a bit unsettling....

yeah. these goons keep dismissing this but now that the magnetosphere seems to be reacting to an approaching force I gurantee we're about to see the unveiling.
