RTS REDUX User ID: 8620349 United States 03/08/2012 01:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Second Biggest Flare Of the Solar Cycle Mar 08, 2012 Quoting: joinca This movie of the March 6, 2012 X5.4 flare was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 171 Angstrom wavelength. One of the most dramatic features is the way the entire surface of the sun seems to ripple with the force of the eruption. This movement comes from something called EIT waves - [...]Since SDO captures images every 12 seconds, it has been able to map the full evolution of these waves and confirm that they can travel across the full breadth of the sun. The waves move at over a million miles per hour, zipping from one side of the sun to the other in about an hour. If you go to the 4:10 mark of the following video from SolarWatcher you can see 'the ripple' even better. I was amazed by it [link to www.youtube.com] Last Edited by RTS REDUX on 03/08/2012 01:26 AM |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2583771 im calling... a Kp8 reaching into a Kp9 for a bit i try to stay away from posting anything i see that is very doomie but, i feel a bit doomie with this one there are a lot of red flags with this event the crappy thing with this sun stuff and us knowing the new carrington is unavoidable, and will happen is, that even if/when we see all the signs... it would be like every other event with that damn sun being that we would not know for sure, untill it happens so, if this one turns out to be the biggie we all look for that we know is coming one day its been a pleasure everyone :) We just had a "glancing blow" from an off-center CME which pushed the K-index to 5, 6, or 7. This next onslaught is poised to be twice as powerful. All the while 1429 is still not entirely Earth-direct....we're at risk of extreme events for at least the next 5 days. 7-day K-indices: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] HAARP (listen) Induction Magnetometer: [link to www.haarp.alaska.edu] HAARP Fluxgate Magnetometer: [link to www.haarp.alaska.edu] NASA Magnetopause 24-hr Simulation: [link to iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov:8080] |

Quoting: Doompa Loompa NOAA update. [link to www.crh.noaa.gov] We really don't know. Could be the biggest storm in 200 years! Or maybe only the biggest in 200 days. The end results are that hard to predict, but the potential is there for a "100 year-flood" type event. It's best to be prepared for the worst. There's a good chance this WILL BE the worst geo-storm in many years. We'll know more in 24 hours. |

The best side of the Earth to be on when this hits is the far side from the Sun. + 1 for those of us here in the states. Because it is night the power consumption is also lower on the power grid. It is neither the middle of Winter or the height of Summer so this lessens the grids load, and if there are any outages we won't suffer as badly. _______ Blog [link to mysolaralerts.blogspot.com] YouTube Channel [link to www.youtube.com] "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" Nin amd I had been looking at this alignment and we were actually expecting this large flare and CME in corelation with it. I don't want to say to much more about it as I think Nin would love to answer this for you. I am sure when she sees this she will be happy to expound on the answer to your question. The expected time of arrival is between 0600-1000 UTC. This means sometime after 2am EST, we can expect the first signs of the incoming CME Plasma cloud [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] SIDC belgium says: The solar wind speed in the post-shock flow reached 580 km/s. Due to this increase in the background solar wind speed, we update the prediction for the arrival time of the interplanetary counterpart of the full halo CME observed on March 7: we expect the ICME arrival around noon on March 8.
