I thought it was a filament loop but it sure didn't release like one, it had intent

I'd like to refine the anaysis of the filament to perhaps being a polar crown cavity or polar crown filament.

They state that the tube like structure is a "flux rope partially embedded in the photosphere". And "We observe coronal plasma shaped by magnetic field lines with a negative curvature (U-shape) sitting at the bottom of a cavity. The cavity is located just above the polar crown filament material. We thus observe the inner part of the cavity above the filament as depicted in the classical three part Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) model composed of a filament, a cavity and a CME front. The filament (in this case a polar crown filament) is part of the cavity and makes a continuous structuring from the filament to the CME front depicted by concentric ellipses (in a 2D cartoon)."

This was actually a good find by the OP and good input from other GLP members. Too bad it was co-opted by the shills. The phrase Salem witch trials comes to mind.

People need to remind themselves that the imagery we look at are not photographs (which by defintion are visible wavelengths captured on photographic film). Also the instruments used to capture these images are only a couple of years old, we SHOULD be discovering new features and processes. Seeing something new should not be surprising ...the universe is far from static. We don't know everything about our own planet let alone an object 93,000,000 miles away.

Yes, it seams it's getting a big bump... and BZ is south...

The incoming CME shock that was detected very early this morning before sunrise, provided a nice treat for Sky Watchers in parts of North America. Olivier Du Tré in Cochrane, Alberta captured some amazing images including this one. "Red aurora's were going off like CRAZY! I could see RED with the naked eye (which was a first for me)". 2012-03-12 12:50 UTC Geomagnetic Storm Underway

Geomagnetic storming reaching the G2 (Moderate) level is underway. Continued geomagnetic activity reaching the G3 (Strong) level is likely between now and the end of March 13 as the parade of recent coronal mass ejections affect Earth. Meanwhile, the Solar Radiation Storm continues its decay and is currently at the S1 (Minor) level. Region 1429 remains complex, but is showing signs of weakening. No significant Radio Blackout events have been observed in the last 24 hours, so no further significant activity is currently expected after March 13. That said, continued activity is possible and any subsequent events would change that outlook. Updates here as conditions warrant.

On the topic of the unknown dark sphere... didn't we see something similar months back with a dark spherical object possibly "cloaked" near mercury... anyone know how the size/shape matches up?

Can you imagine how much invaluable astronomical information was burned by the spanish in south america or lost in the Library of Alexandria fire? Or for that matter what is hidden away beneath the vatican. Okay, I have a question or two or three and for those who have been solar watching for years (only a year here) it is going to seem dumb, and I should have asked it a long long time ago but I didn't.

SS1429 is rotating away from us.

1) When it comes back around it will be given a new number - correct?

2) How long does it take to cycle back around, exactly?

3) Will it be bigger or do you think after all it unleased and might unleash on the backside, that it will still be BGD? I know this one is a guess but your best guesses will mean something to me.

Bz is dipping slightly south and winds are around 650

And I do have the answer on the sun rotation = 25 days

Solar rotation period is about 27 days. It rotates faster near the equator and slower at high latitudes. If an active regions returns it would be 13.5 days after it crosses the limb. Here's a chart of the activity for the past 2 cycles.

2) there is no guarantee it will come back around at all, it may degrade to nothing, that is why they give it a new number. It could be nothing to a speck, or 10X bigger, we'll have to watch and see :)

What exactly does Solar Flux indicate?

The 10.7 cm (2800 MHz) radio flux is the amount of solar noise (light) that is emitted by the sun at 10.7 cm wavelengths. The solar flux is measured and reported at approximately 1700 UT daily by the Penticton Radio Observatory in British Columbia, Canada. Values are not corrected for variations resulting from the eccentric orbit of the Earth around the Sun.

The solar flux is used as a basic indicator of solar activity. It can vary from values below 50 to values in excess of 300 (representing very low solar activity and high to very high solar activity respectively). Values in excess of 200 occur typical during the peak of the solar cycles.

The solar flux is closely related to the amount of ionization taking place at F2 layer heights (heights sensitive to long-distance radio communication). High solar flux values generally provide good ionization for long-distance communications at higher than normal frequencies. Low solar flux values can restrict the band of frequencies which are usable for long distance communications. The solar flux is measured in "solar flux units" (s.f.u.).
