Why the same spot ?

Quoting "same spot"... short answer... don't know.

I guess I meant same latitude, as same spot would imply something slightly different. Part of the reason one sees them more commonly at the edges of the disk is purely visual... due to the contrast of having "space" as the backdrop vs. having the Sun's disk as a backdrop. I guess I'm implying that coronal cavities form more often than what we easily see, which is obviously true since coronal cavities are part of the whole package which comprise a prominence, the coronal cavity just being different detail exposed due to the different wavelengths/temperatures of each of the SDO sensor bands.

As to the physics as to why they seem to form more often at this latitude range (if indeed they DO form here more often (statistical numbers for that?))... good question.

I would guess (GUESS!) that all prominences are not created equal. That some form with well defined structure in the temperature ranges that show these cavities well. If there is statistical truth to cavities forming more often here, at this latitude, it could possibly be used to reveal some info regarding plasma flow patterns, temperature distribution, etc. of the sun and/or prominence formation.

Good morning everyone

Has anyone come up with a good theory, educated guess on the absorption maps yet ???

If our poles are our weakest points, why would the electron concentration be closer to the equator during a "non-solar event", and not necessarily dictated on whether sol facing or not ???

When looking at the the absorption maps during quiet periods in the past, there is a slight variation of increased absorption in sol facing areas, but never this significant unless we are in the midst of a strong geomagnetic storm.

It is very coincidental that the asteroid just happened to blow by in between earth and the moon around the same time.


And yes I do see the electron concentration moving westward, but still don't understand the intensity.

when NASA states there was a crack that opens in the magnetosphere do we know where?

this last one...was it say over hawaii?

The reason for this show was the interplanetary magnetic field, or IMF. On April 1st the IMF tipped south, opening a crack in Earth's magnetospherre. Solar wind poured in to fuel the auroras. (So the sun was involved after all.)

i know the themis project has recorded a hole on the sun facing side the size the the entire planet.

i also see these cracks happening everytime we see SS 1429...connected?

A small halo CME from early today is Earth-directed and should give us a "glancing blow" sometime around April 5. A coronal hole wind stream should be here around the same time; so expect some agitation to the magnetosphere in a few days.

The Russian plot only shows a percentage of change.

It shows two spikes in early March from the X-flare proton events (cosmic rays from the Sun). Then we see a "Forbush decrease" around the time the CMEs reached us. As the AR1429 rotated away from Earth we see a gradual increase in Galactic Cosmic Rays (in fact, you can see the cycle of day and night).

I wish there were better explanations of these charts for interpretation; however the best I've found is the U of Del.site:

Space Daily has an interesting article on the impact of the recent X5 flare/proton event/CME. They casually mention that Cycle 24 will peak in late 2014. WTF? Where did this projection come from? The 11-year cycle maximum was originally predicted for 2012; then it was pushed back to early 2013. Is this a typo or did I miss something?

"It's been seven years since we've had a storm like that," he said. "This is the first major storm event since the deep solar minimum of 2008-2009. We are finally seeing the Sun 'wake up' as it proceeds to the next solar maximum."

A solar maximum is a period of increased activity on the Sun, and minimum-to-maximum-to-minimum cycles generally last 11 years each. Solar activity began to pick up in 2010, is steadily increasing and should peak in late 2014.

As the Sun becomes more active, Mlynczak said, it emits more ultraviolet radiation and produces more solar flares - coronal mass ejections (CMEs) - which are absorbed in the atmosphere. "More heating results, and the atmosphere gets warmer, and the infrared emission increases," he said.

"We don't know yet how these affect weather or climate - likely there is not any direct effect," he said, "but there may be, over time, influences on ozone that affect climate."

the lastest data i can find in over 4 years old.
NASA has listed 6 cracks in the magentosphere in the last 2 months....where? how big? and how long did they last?

maybe it's just me but this seems kinda important.

cracks in our shield...
data gaps...or our satellites going off line for days...
when we would need them the most...

if i recall right solar cycle 4 was the longest at 13.7 years....at least that is what us humans have recorded.

11 years ago one of the most powerful Xflares was observed from Sunspot 9393: (X20)



amazing how much more active the sun was back then!! I find the Lasco C2 especially stunning...

I think the reason for the push back is due to the prolongued minimum of SC23-24(which at first wasn`t anticipated)

Hugh .... this is what I need to know about ... please I need to know..... if you have ant insight, please.

Looks like a good-sized bolide (fireball meteor) to me. Happens all the time, tho few are caught on video. I was thinking maybe the reported "big-boom" heard in the Pocono Mtns. recently may have been a meteor also, but the weathermen claim it was thunder.
