SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

Large filament eruption & CME spotted in the far northeast, near the noerth pole. Most likely a far-side event. Oh, there was also a C1 flare from the impotent Fizzle-Monster.

New regions numbers 1482, '83, & '84. AR1482 is couple of spots just east of 1479; AR1483 is a small group of spots emerging east of 1477/78 in the south; and AR1484 consists of 2 spots coming over the NE limb.

The revised ENLIL CME model shows only 1 CME (the other one got airbrushed out I guess) and the new forecast arrival time is 5/15 @ 4:00 UTC (the CME evidently stopped at Motel 6 for rester, LOL). I swear they just make this shit up sometimes. (see yesterday's 2 CME alerts)

NASA's integrated Space Weather Anaysis system still lists two CME arrivals on 5/14 @ 14:28 utc & 19:26 utc (who the hell knows?).

Anyone have any info about the returning sunspots 1473/1469 ???
They actually look like they have joined forces to create a huge blemish on sol. I've looked around but can't seem to find much info in regard to classification etc for SSs on the backside of the sun.

We may not have to wait too much longer however to find out either way, looks like it is just coming over the far east side today.

The Heliosphere Bow Shock Does Not Exist --> May 14, 2012
New results from NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) reveal that the bow shock, widely accepted by researchers to precede the heliosphere as it plows through tenuous gas and dust from the galaxy, does not exist.
According to a paper published in the journal Science online, the latest refinements in relative speed and local interstellar magnetic field strength prevent the heliosphere, the magnetic "bubble" that cocoons Earth and the other planets, from developing a bow shock. The bow shock would consist of ionized gas or plasma that abruptly and discontinuously changes in density in the region of space that lies straight ahead of the heliosphere.

A large CME has been detected by SOHO Cor2 today. It came from the SE limb region (near 1481) and is not Earth-directed.

Also, our smallest active region, 1483, has recently produced a C 1.7 flare and an earlier C 1. This seems to be a potentially volatile region.

edit- Now I'm beginning to doubt my first hunch.....it's possble the star cluster seen on the SOHO C2 could be the Hyades. Both are in Taurus and very near the Sun now from Earth's perspective.

The Pleiades is not seen on the Cor 2, but in the upper left on the Cor 3 images. This pic from SOHO in 2000 shows a similar view as today's (minus the halo cme).

The white dots on the Cor 2 are unknown (to me) background stars. There's billions and billions of them donchyaknow (the planet is Jupiter). The SOHO instruments were designed to look at and around the sun. If you want to look at other stars it's best to look AWAY from the Sun, LOL.

As you may have noticed, both of NASA's CME arrival predictions=FAIL. Nary a ripple in the magnetosphere today. However, NOAA's tea-leave readers have prognosticated a 4:00 utc arrival (now) and we may be seeing some disturbance soon.

AR1476 has produced 2 more C-flares and the entire Sun appears to be simmering with lots of low-level activity. I think we're gonna see a higher number of sunspots than we've seen so far this cycle. Just a gut feeling that Cycle 24 is about to turn it up a notch.

AR1476 has produced about 105 C-flares (yes, I counted them!) and 11 M-flares since May 5th! An amazing turn of events compared to last months lull.

Looks like a star cluster..there are thousands of them out there...one of our favorite things to look at through our scope..

i am talking about the stars not the nude girl!!

awhile back i did a thread on this...that GOES goes off line alot...sometimes they photoshop the image and sometimes it is just blank or they hold the last images till the bird is back online.
it does look odd.
the jest of the thread was these satellites are getting old and they just might need some TLC....we know with all the money going to fight war and the bankers...this TLC will never come.
unless we can change the minds of those who have the money.
