Same here Shadasonic. We have seen this over, and over, and over, and over aqain during this cycle for the past several years now. Even when we watch a specific rythm with a build up and release of energy with the regions. When we were due to get "smacked", we were spared. There seems to still be a "hand of protection" that has sparred us; not only from CMEs, but from large Asteroids, and Comets.:)

Delta-H Maneuver Today at 1800 UTC
Today at 1800 UTC we will perform our 10th momentum management (Delta-H) maneuver. Data will unavailable from the SDO instruments from 1800 until 1824 UTC (2:00-2:24 pm ET) while the thrusters are fired to change the reaction wheel speeds. Reaction wheels are used to keep SDO very accurately pointed at the Sun. These burns keep the reaction wheels within their speed limits.

As I am sure most of you know, those of us that track CME ejections depend upon the Stereo spacecraft to provide us with accurate images in stereoscopic view. For the whole of Cycle 24 we have been blessed with a view that has never been available to us here on Earth. Launched on October 26, 2006 the Stereo Satellites are in a heliocentric orbit around the Sun. On February 6, 2011, the two spacecraft were exactly 180 degrees apart from each other, allowing the entire Sun to be seen at once for the first time. [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] From November 2010 [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] through mid 2011 was the time that we could best guage the imnpact that a CME ejection from the center of the disk between these two satellites would have upon the Earth. The STEREO spacecraft continue to separate from each other at a combined rate of approximately 44 degrees per year. This is their current position as of this post on May 17, 2012. The principal benefit of the mission is stereoscopic images of the sun. In other words, because the satellites are at different points along the Earth's orbit from the Earth itself, they can photograph parts of the sun that are not visible from the Earth. This permits observers to directly monitor the far side of the sun, instead of inferring the activity on the far side from data that can be observed from Earth's view of the sun. The STEREO satellites principally monitor the far side for coronal mass ejections—massive bursts of solar wind, solar plasma, and magnetic fields that are sometimes ejected into space.

Since the radiation from coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, can disrupt Earth's communications, airlines, power grids, and satellites, more accurate forecasting of CMEs has the potential to provide greater warning to operators of these services. Before STEREO, the development of the sunspots that are associated with CMEs on the far side of the Sun was only possible using helioseismology, which only provides low-resolution maps of the activity on the far side of the Sun. Since the sun rotates every 25-27 days, detail on the far side was invisible to Earth for days at a time before STEREO. The period that the Sun's far side was previously invisible was a principal reason for the STEREO mission.

STEREO has also been used to discover 122 eclipsing binaries and study hundreds more variable stars. STEREO can look at the same star for up to 20 days. We are all aware of the Stereos ability to find and track Comets and were fascinated with the ability of tracking Comet Elenin.



I love the majesty of SDO, but will be sore lost without the Earth directed data that has been provided by these twin dynamos.

On the up side, as they rotate around toward the backside of the Sun, we will have a view of the Sunspot Regions, CMEs, Filaments, Prominences, and other happenings there, while SDO and SOHO keep us aprised of what is going on in our region of the solarsystem.

A NEW REGION IN NE (they wouldn't dare name it 1486, would they?) looks to a Beta with a big spot and a small spot. It's not listed as returning region, so I tend to think it may be a growing region to watch.

CME FROM THE X....OOOPS .. I MEAN M5 FLARE IS EARTH DIRECTED !!

INCOMING CME? A coronal mass ejection (CME) that flew off the sun's western limb on May 17th might hit Earth after all. NOAA forecasters say a shock wave from the blast could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on May 18th or 19th. The CME, pictured below, was propelled by an M5-class solar flare from departing sunspot AR1476.

A 40% chance of geomagnetic storm is pretty high by NOAA's standards. I did mention last night that we would see an Interplanetary Shock from this in the solar winds....jes' sayin'. By the way, there's no mention of it on NASA's iSWA Alerts.

University of Oslo and other institutions plan to launch 50 micro-satellites on one rocket to study the aurora and ionospheric disturbances-

"UiO has developed very small instruments that can measure micro-structures and turbulence in the plasma clouds. The instrument consists of four needles that can be mounted on satellites about the size of a milk carton. No one else has managed this.

Unfortunately, a single satellite is not enough. It takes just over an hour and a half to orbit the Earth. This is far too long. The phenomena researchers are looking for often disappear after just an hour. Therefore, it is impossible to use a single satellite to study the changes over such a short time. The researchers need a lot of satellites, which will be spread around the Earth like pearls on a strong.

In 2013 the universities will work together to launch 50 small satellites into a polar orbit at an altitude of 320 km above the Earth. This will allow the satellites to pass each geographical point at intervals of just a few minutes, both above the polar regions and the equator.

The satellites will lose speed due to air resistance and their Earth orbits will continuously degrade.

This will provide the researchers with an opportunity to study all layers of the ionosphere. The calculated service life is three to eight weeks, depending on solar activity, before the satellites fall into the atmosphere and burn up."

From looking at NICT, (bye bye) I would venture to speculate that we are seeing opposing magnetic vortex's more than the ruffles potato chip ENLIL idea, Oh well, I have the option to speculate here, it would work with the field lines flipping back and forth from left hand to right hand, but I really can't see what could produce a reverse vortex.

Left a comment the other day about my solar flowers oddly clicking like never before .. and hours later we had a flare .. happening again right now .. seems a lil off to think lil solar toys could gauge activity, but if we have another flare .. I may think so (glp style), and go buy some more to watch what could be predicting activity ..

One thing i've kept track of over the last three months is the correlation of heavy chemtrails and solar anomalies. The last four large flares that had CMEs associated with them, the latest from 1476 included, the trailing has started heavily, 3 hours before any 'registered' event. I'm wondering if everything is set up on delay for us. 'They' react to events well before we have any knowledge of them, and solar charts seem to go offline, or completely shut down at the worst moments.we've had no trails for over a week and 3 hours before 1476 went off with its M5.1???,it became a checkerboard. I even told my brother something was brewing and sure enough, like clockwork, large CME.I would give anything to know what is 'really' going on with our s. system
