It does not appear to be Earth-directed. :5/19erupt: :5/19cme: Hugh gotta ?, seems filaments are becoming so much more prevalent, is this normal for a max. Several 'experts' say no, seems just part of the flip to me? “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Hugh M Eye User ID: 15388345 United States 05/20/2012 04:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi, shadasonic, sorry I missed your question earlier ( I've been working to rehabilitate my long-neglected guitars). I don't think we're seeing any more filaments than is usual. I've noticed, however, sometimes we see increased waves of filaments for a week or two (usually during a lull in flare activity). It's hard to find coherent (for the non-physicist) readable info on filament formation. Filaments are another of the Sun's many mysteries that have yet to be adequately explained by today's astro-physicists. What we know is that filaments are attached at the surface (photosphere) and extend high into the corona. They are magnetically-suspended threads of cooler plasma and sometimes can remain stable for weeks or months. Helio-physicists can see them and measure them and write nifty equations about them; but so far I can't find one good explanation of how or why they form. But here's a sampling of what I dug up..... "Filaments last for a few weeks or months. The gas in a filament will eventually move to a different layer in the Sun and will no longer be visible in an image of the chromosphere. But at the same time, other gas may move into the chromosphere and create a new filament someplace else. The birth and death of filaments is a mystery and the subject of ongoing study by solar scientists." [link to solar.physics.montana.edu] "Prominences are anchored to the Sun's surface in the photosphere, and extend outwards into the Sun's corona. While the corona consists of extremely hot ionized gases, known as plasma, which do not emit much visible light, prominences contain much cooler plasma, similar in composition to that of the chromosphere. A prominence forms over timescales of about a day, and stable prominences may persist in the corona for several months. Some prominences break apart and give rise to coronal mass ejections. Scientists are currently researching how and why prominences are formed." [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] More on Filaments and Prominences- [link to solar.physics.montana.edu] Folks into really big words and convoluted sentence structure, here are some scholarly physics papers about various aspects of filaments: [link to solarphysics.livingreviews.org] [link to adsabs.harvard.edu] [link to www.agu.org] AGU wants to charge me $25 just to read their stupid bullshit paper. Whatever happened to the internet being a free, worldwide library to share knowledge and ideas. I'm waiting for NASA, NOAA, HAARP, and Lockheed to start charging to see their info (they're already well-overpaid by US taxpayers).Ugh. Maybe NICT simulation will come back as pay-per-view, LOL. |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 15388345 United States 05/20/2012 06:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Boulder Magnetometer Kp Index got up to a 5, but is now near 1; so I guess our weak disturbance is winding down now. Boulder Magnetometer: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] NOAA's Geomagnetic K-Indices: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] On the NASA magnetosphere simulation cygnet I notice an anomaly at approx. 22:00 ( NOAA reported the shock at 2:15, so I'm not sure what happened @ 22:00) and little heating-up at around 3:00 on: [link to iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov:8080] I'm a little mystified by the lack of activity in the southern hemisphere. Only active regions 1478 & 1483 remain and they seem to lack the "right stuff". Maybe the long, extended minimum has put the Sun in a lazy, slo-motion climb to maximum. Of course things may change in an few hours. Some more active regions are soon coming over the limb. It looks like a north-south interacting combo, with the southern region being larger. They should be quite visible within 24hrs. Look at 90 degrees east on the Carrington EUV projection: [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] SDO/AIA 171 image shows the N-S connection: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] The X-ray flux has been flat-lining again. AR1484 is sitting right between 2 coronal holes and I think we may see more activity there. The one coronal hole is right on the equator (very rare!) and will definitely affect the magnetosphere on the 22nd (or I'll deny everything). I just have a hunch that 1484 may surprise us.
