Induced Currents - Weak power grid fluctuations can occur. Aurora - Aurora may be visible at high latitudes such as Canada and Alaska. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] I'm not sure why they call it "onset" when unsettled conditions have persisted for 24 hours or more. The homeless could do as good a job as NOAA tracking spaceweather conditions. In fact, they have! I've been mostly homeless for the past 5 years! NOAA should hire the homeless to help monitor their geomagnetic and solar indices. Hugh M Eye User ID: 15388345 United States 05/22/2012 10:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, from 1484 and a B9.7 from new region 1488 in the NE. This coronal hole has proved very persistent. The solar wind velocity is now up to 550-600km/s and the Bz has dipped south again. Unfortunately, I don't have any links to aurora-cams on the Antarctic Circle, but I bet some penguins are getting quite a light show tonight. joinca User ID: 8793176 United States 05/23/2012 12:26 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Temporary Interruption in browse data Tuesday, May 22, 2012 There is a temporary interruption in the service of browse data on the SDO website. [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] and [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] are temporarily offline. We are working to get it back up as soon as possible. Today, tomorrow, and Thursday we will be running tests of the Venus transit image sequences. During these tests the AIA images may be partial images or even striped images. These are designed to send data more suitable for studying the effects Venus will have on the data. Please be patient while we explore new ways to use the instrument. nerdrage88sasr User ID: 717919 Australia 05/23/2012 08:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | PRESTO FROM SIDC - RWC BELGIUM Wed May 23 2012, 1231 UT Catania sunspot group 39 (NOAA AR 1484) produced a C1.2 flare peaking at 00:27 UT today. More C-class flares can be expected from this group, as well as from recently emerged Catania sunspot group 47 (NOAA AR 1488). The post-shock solar wind flow was followed by a fast solar wind stream (with the speed reaching 700 km/s) from a small low-latitude coronal hole in the southern hemisphere. Due to high interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude (that reached 15 nT), active geomagnetic conditions (K = 4) were reported by Dourbes and IZMIRAN and minor storm conditions (K = 5) were reported by NOAA. Currently the solar wind speed is still elevated (around 620 km/s), but the IMF magnitude decreased to average values (around 4 nT). We therefore expect quiet geomagnetic conditions.
