Big Bear H-alpha movie shows flare activity increasing, as well as a CME from the west limb. Unfortunately, SOHO & STEREO images are not up-to-date.

CME eruption from a filament associated with AR1484 near the west limb. We'll have to wait for more data before we rule out any geoeffectiveness.

Venus Transit Testing Today --- Thursday, May 24, 2012
Starting at 1700 UTC (1 pm ET) today and lasting until 0300 UTC tomorrow (May 25, which is 11 pm ET May 24), we will be running a simulation of the observations to be taken during the Venus transit on June 5. AIA will be switching modes to take different sequences of images to allow the scientists to study the instrument and Venus. HMI will try out its transit mode as well but will return to normal operations after about an hour of special mode.

Another beautiful prominence in the SE. Our new region (1491) can also be seen flaring. AR1490 has been mistakingly identified as the culprit for the last few C-flares; actually, the activity is coming from our new friend (which I'll call AR11491 for convenience's sake) who looks to be a formidable active region. A check on the haarp riometer suggests that the earth was hit by something that penetrated our 'shield'.

According to Solarsoft's flare list, the first C2 was from 1484 on the western limb just prior to the eruption from 1491 on the opposite side.

In late 1882, Massachusetts astronomer David Peck Todd traveled to California to photograph the transit of Venus from the summit of Mount Hamilton, where a solar photographic telescope made by the renowned optical firm Alvan Clark & Sons waited among the stacks of bricks and timbers from which Lick Observatory was rising. As the transit unfolded on December 6th, Todd obtained a superb series of plates under perfect skies. His 147 glass negatives were carefully stored in the mountain vault...(snip)

Digital imaging technology made reanimating Todd's transit images a comparatively simple undertaking. The result, which premiered at the International Astronomical Union's general assembly in Sydney in July 2003, shows Venus's silhouette flickering strangely as it marches across the Sun's face. It's the shadow-show of an astronomical event that occurred when Queen Victoria sat on the throne of Great Britain and Chester Arthur was president of the United States — a moving record of an event seen by no one now living, and a preview of what millions will see for the last time in their lives on June 5-6, 2012.

NASA-TV to host live telecast of June 5th's transit of Venus as well as a special webcast from Mauna Kea, Hawaii.-

The transit occurs when Venus passes directly between Earth and the sun. Viewers will see Venus as a small dot gliding slowly across our nearest star. Historically, viewed by luminaries like Captain James Cook and even Benjamin Franklin, this rare alignment is how we measured the size of our solar system.

There have been 53 transits since 2000 B.C. The last time the event occurred was on June 8, 2004, watched by millions worldwide. This year, observers on all seven continents will be in position to see it.

NASA TV coverage will include updates from NASA centers across the country and locations from some of the 148 countries hosting viewing activities. Images taken of the transit from the International Space Station and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Solar Dynamics Observatory also will be aired with scientists sharing their perspectives and the historical significance of the event.

This will be an exiting event, to be sure, but I have one question. How come NASA said the Moon was too bright to use the Hubble Space telescope to get us hi-res images and now it's OK to point it at the SUN?

'Hubble cannot look at the sun directly, so astronomers are planning to point the telescope at the Earth's moon, using it as a mirror to capture reflected sunlight and isolate the small fraction of the light that passes through Venus's atmosphere. Imprinted on that small amount of light are the fingerprints of the planet’s atmospheric makeup'.
