This looks like it's about to get interesting [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Well almost, I'm sure you meant 1476, otherwise I wholeheartedly agree. Old monster still has some bite left, and his Little Buddy in the south looks to be growing in strength. We've recently had a C1.5 and a C1.2 from 1493 (or 94, depending on the coin flip, haha). [link to www.lmsal.com] Oh, well my fabulous smilies aren't forthcoming yet so I'll leave you with a link to the latest SDO 171a (yellow) image where you can see the trans-equatorial magnetic connection is much stronger in the east than in the west. If any CME results from this, it will be Earth-directed. This, by my count, will be the second filament plasma eruption headed our way; in addition to a possible glancing blow from a previous eruption. The scenario is like a baseball batter watching an oncoming fastball. Although Andromeda is approaching us more than 2,000 times faster, it will take 4 billion years before the strike. Computer simulations derived from Hubble's data show that it will take an additional two billion years after the encounter for the interacting galaxies to completely merge under the tug of gravity and reshape into a single elliptical galaxy similar to the kind commonly seen in the local universe. Fox (Phys.org) -- On May 17, 2012 an M-class flare exploded from the sun. The eruption also shot out a burst of solar particles traveling at nearly the speed of light that reached Earth about 20 minutes after the light from the flare. An M-class flare is considered a "moderate" flare, at least ten times less powerful than the largest X-class flares, but the particles sent out on May 17 were so fast and energetic that when they collided with atoms in Earth's atmosphere, they caused a shower of particles to cascade down toward Earth's surface. The shower created what's called a ground level enhancement (GLE). full story-- [link to phys.org] Peace "Luck is what happens when preparation meets Oppurtunity"-- Seneca (5BC-65AD) |

Surprisingly, they state that this was the first GLE of the current solar cycle. I would've guessed that those two huge proton storms we saw earlier this year produced measurable GLE's as well. This tells me that maybe other factors are playing a role. I found the plots from the ICETOP Neutron Monitor for May 17: [link to www.bartol.udel.edu] They're also Beta-testing a GLE Alarm which sends you an e-mail alert--sign up here: [link to www.bartol.udel.edu] PEACE. |
