SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily) | |
shadasonic User ID: 15732022 United States 06/16/2012 09:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In short, it means a geomagnetic storm is in progress. The GOES 15 is now on the dayside and is being affected by the solar wind's magnetic field leaking into geosynchronus orbit. Here's the NOAA explanation: The Hp component is perpendicular to the satellite orbit plane and Hp is essentially parallel to Earth's rotation axis. If these data drop to near zero, or less, when the satellite is on the dayside it may be due to a compression of Earth's magnetopause to within geosynchronous orbit, exposing satellites to negative and/or highly variable magnetic fields. On the nightside, a near zero, or less, value of the field indicates strong currents that are often associated with substorms and an intensification of currents in the Earth's geomagnetic tail. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Several FM radio stations I listen to went blank, no static, nothing. Three to be exact all from different home companies. Do you think its connected? Not if it's a local station spinning records or whatever; but possibly, if they're broadcasting a satellite feed. Here's a good website with current radio propagation forecasts- [link to www.hamqsl.com] Thanks just wondering, great site by the way! Time/Space You're very observant there, AC! I was afraid to bring that one up today, hehheh. It's true that NASA had 3 CME arrivals listed for the 16th, but two of them were only minutes apart. The 12th was along time ago by CME standards, so it was most likely of little effect or was swallowed up by the oncoming M-flare CMEs. This geomagnetic storm seems to be winding down now, but it may not be over yet. If the Bz dips negative and the magnetotail discharges we may see more storm levels. When SOHO updated, filling in the data gaps, we can see a density spike up near 115 counts/cu. cm. That's a respectable CME.
