New Prediction System to Protect Astronauts from Solar Storms-

Protons with energies surpassing 100 megaelectron volts essentially sandblast everything in their path.

Though people on Earth are protected by the planet's magnetic field and thick atmosphere, astronauts in spacecraft beyond low-Earth orbit, or people at high altitudes near the poles, can be exposed to this increased radiation.

This can potentially cause radiation sickness, with symptoms such as fever and vomiting.

This is one of the purposes of the South Pole neutron monitors someone was asking about. I hope they have it up and running this week. Space vomit can be really messy in zero g's, LOL.

Hugh, what happens when there are those breaks in the magnetosphere? Do those protons get into earths atmoshpere and maybe propogate themselves down into our lower atmoshpere? I know they cause the Aurora's at the poles, but do they continue downward into the air around us?
