On March 7, the sun let loose a massive X5.4 solar flare during its biggest outburst in five years. NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope saw an unusually long-lasting pulse of gamma rays — a form of light with even greater energies than X-rays — produced by the flare.

At the flare's peak, the gamma rays that were emitted from the sun were 2 billion times more energetic than visible light, making it a record-setting detection during or immediately after any previously seen solar flare, researchers said. In fact, as the flare erupted, the sun briefly became the brightest object in the gamma-ray sky.

" The sun is (usually) not a very bright source in gamma rays," said Nicola Omodei, an astrophysicist at Stanford University in California. "We don't detect the sun on a daily basis. On the other hand, on March 7, the sky looked completely different, as the sun became an intense, bright source of high-energy gamma rays."

VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is a ground-based gamma-ray instrument operating at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) in southern Arizona, USA. It is an array of four 12m optical reflectors for gamma-ray astronomy in the GeV - TeV energy range. These imaging Cherenkov telescopes are deployed such that they have the highest sensitivity in the VHE energy band (50 GeV - 50 TeV), with maximum sensitivity from 100 GeV to 10 TeV. This VHE observatory effectively complements the NASA Fermi mission.

Computer simulation of a very-high-energy gamma ray interacting in the atmosphere. Such energetic gamma rays are produced near pulsars, neutron stars and super-massive black holes. The gamma rays hit the Earth's atmosphere at a rate of about 100 million per second. The animation shows that a shower of high-energy particles (mostly electrons and positrons) is produced. Those particles that travel faster than the speed of light in air, emit a bluish light called Cherenkov light. This Cherenkov light is detected by specialized ground-based telescopes, such as VERITAS, HESS, MAGIC, and CANGAROO in search of the origin of extreme cosmic particle accelerators.

Hello, Starry, Probably not here at Earth as this region is no longer facing Earth. This loop's breaking point seems to correspond with the time of that huge ACE proton spike NINz posted.

It also may have something to do with the strong CME launched 5 hours after the M6.9 event.

I haven't seen any analysis or models yet of this later CME; so it's possible some of this plasma could be Earth-directed. In that case it WOULD affect the solar wind at Earth. We may know more in a few hours or when NASA wakes up tomorrow morning, haha.

Is this part of his "presence of high density of magnetically polarized plasma in the galactic plane which we are now entering" ?
Is this stuff getting in through the breaches in the magnetosphere?

KANNUR: Though not for first time in the state, red rain in parts of Kannur on Thursday did create some panic and curiosity among the residents in the district. The strange phenomenon happened around 6:50am and lasted for 15 minutes. People in the 1km area in and around Edachery in Puzhati panchayat panicked as their courtyards turned blood red after rain.

*Numerous research groups got to work analyzing the red rain, trying to determine the cause of the discoloration. It was determined that the rain contained around 90% solid red particles, composed primarily of carbon and oxygen, and to a lesser extent hydrogen, nitrogen, silicon, chlorine, and various metals. The water samples were then brought to the Centre for Earth Science Studies(CESS), where further studies were conducted. After filtering out the particles, the water component of the rain was found to be normal, except for the fact that there were no dissolved salts present.

J Thomas Brenna at Cornell University also explored the particles discovered in the rain and determined that, since they collapsed when dried, they were filled with liquid. Within the particles seven amino acids were identified: phenylalanine, glutamic acid/glutamine, serine, aspartic acid, threonine, and arginine, and thus the particles were of marine or terrestrial plant origin. Well, all of that is delightful, but where did the red particles come from? It is this question that has yet to be given a definitive answer.

The post-flare loops have continued growing out of 1515. In the SDO movie it looks like a blooming electric flower. The immense size and intensity of this eruption 10 hours after the initial blast is proof-positive that it's an extreme Long Duration Event. Had this flare happened a few days ago we may be looking at some Carrington-level auroras. Simply amazing and beautiful.

Not at all, Finley, you done good! Whenever solar activity goes wild, it seems we're swamped with trolls posting off-topic gobbledygook and promoting their whacko YouTube conspiracy vids. We'll have keep our eye on the ball and not let this thread get derailed too much.

I don't wish to be mean to anyone, but I've noticed attempts to troll this thread for two days now. When I went back to the "March Madness" pages, when we had X-flares, big M's, and the strongest magnetic storm of the year; I noticed the same thing happened then. We were all busy and excited over solar events and we got hammered by crackpot UFO videos and other silly nonsense. Sorry to rant, but it's a very irksome annoyance.

I was flabbergasted. Truly awesome, ain't it?

No shit, I left at 8 this morning and came back to more stuff than I can wrap my mind around at this time . PHEW, all kinds of crazy shit... but its so good!
