NiNzrez (OP) User ID: 12844841 United States 07/09/2012 02:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | AURORA SURPRISE: July 9th began with a brief but beautiful display of auroras over North America. "I had gone out to search for noctilucent clouds, but instead I found these Northern Lights," says Robert Snache of Rama First Nation, Ontario: The source of the display was not an explosion on the sun, but rather a fluctuation in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The IMF near Earth tipped south, briefly opening a crack in our planet's magnetosphere. Solar wind poured in and ignited the lights. More auroras could be in the offing. A CME that left the sun on July 6th might deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on July 9-10. NOAA forecasters estimate a 25% to 30% chance of polar geomagnetic storms if and when the cloud arrives. [link to spaceweather.com] - soooo according to spaceweather, the Kp5 storm were having right now has nothing at all to do with a CME arrival? MKay also note. that they are saying the CME that occurred with the X flare has not arrived just yet on the 7th they reported it would arrive on July 8th or 9th now they change that to 9th-10 and without a report of the reason behind the change This tells me that they do expect "something" from this X flare associated CME to hit From spaceweather.com on JKuly 7th "The explosion hurled a CME into space. According to this movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, the cloud appears to be heading south and away from Earth. However, we cannot yet rule out a glancing blow to our planet on July 8th or 9th." [link to spaceweather.com] Today they are saying July 9th or 10th for the CME arrival and that the Kp5 storm were having right now is NOT from any CME. -On the My Solar Alerts blog, we disagreed with their arrival dates of July 8th-9th we reported the arrival for this CME on the 9th-10 what they are now saying [link to mysolaralerts.blogspot.com] "We now see there IS a CME associated with this X flare event. Earth is well connected with the region of 1515. This CME was not directly Earth directed as it was ejected to the south and west, but a glancing blow to Earth's magnetosphere is likely late on July 9th into the 10th" Last Edited by NiNzrez on 07/09/2012 02:21 PM Join Me On The GLP SOLAR WATCH Thread Thread: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! Whenever solar activity goes wild, it seems we're swamped with trolls posting off-topic gobbledygook and promoting their whacko YouTube conspiracy vids. We'll have keep our eye on the ball and not let this thread get derailed too much. I don't wish to be mean to anyone, but I've noticed attempts to troll this thread for two days now. When I went back to the "March Madness" pages, when we had X-flares, big M's, and the strongest magnetic storm of the year; I noticed the same thing happened then. We were all busy and excited over solar events and we got hammered by crackpot UFO videos and other silly nonsense. Sorry to rant, but it's a very irksome annoyance. ok im back.. Hugh M Eye still didnt come back and say sorry you might want to look at the top left hand corner of the site of the GLP LOGO its a UFO! |

madajs User ID: 6377684 Canada 07/09/2012 04:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The trends continue, both the North and South poles exhibit and continue to grow a positive polarity. North pole is exhibiting +0.03 gauss (still a newborn baby after it's recent flip), South pole is exhibiting +0.51 gauss. The enigma of one pole having flipped while the other pole remains static, continues. [link to wso.stanford.edu] I expect once the North polar field gains it's legs the sunspot polarities in the Northern Hemisphere will follow suit. It should take months yet before the North polar field has any significant kind of strength (it's currently strengthening about +0.01 gauss per 10 days) And always, he fought the temptation to choose a clear, safe course, warning: "That path leads ever down into stagnation." |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 19439665 Germany 07/09/2012 05:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | hiya crew back from work Sounds of Northern Lights are born close to ground 09.07.2012 For the first time, researchers at Aalto University in Finland have located where the sounds associated with the northern lights are created. The auroral sounds that have been described in folktales and by wilderness wanderers are formed about 70 meters above the ground level in the measured case. [link to www.youtube.com] "Our research proved that, during the occurrence of the northern lights, people can hear natural auroral sounds related to what they see. In the past, researchers thought that the aurora borealis was too far away for people to hear the sounds it made. This is true. However, our research proves that the source of the sounds that are associated with the aurora borealis we see is likely caused by the same energetic particles from the sun that create the northern lights far away in the sky. These particles or the geomagnetic disturbance produced by them seem to create sound much closer to the ground," said Professor Unto K. Laine from Aalto University. Details about how the auroral sounds are created are still a mystery. The sounds do not occur regularly when the northern lights are seen. The recorded, unamplified sounds can be similar to crackles or muffled bangs which last for only a short period of time. Other people who have heard the auroral sounds have described them as distant noise and sputter. Because of these different descriptions, researchers suspect that there are several mechanisms behind the formation of these auroral sounds. These sounds are so soft that one has to listen very carefully to hear them and to distinguish them from the ambient noise. The Aalto University researcher's study will be published in the proceedings of the 19th International Congress on Sound and Vibration. The congress is held in Vilnius, Lithuania from 8 to 12 July 2012. [link to www.aalto.fi] |
