Question for someone:
If a BIG X popped off and the CME hit while we (North America) were experiencing night...would it still impact us?
Quoting: Wash the direct hit would be on the sun facing side of earth BUT it would hit all of earth no one side is missed while abother is hit Quoting: NiNzrez CME's usually last for several hours during which time earth just keeps on spinning and soaking up the damage. My question is: after the big X-flare pops - say X75-100 - wouldn't the protons that slam into the earth right away also cause 'grid' problems? Most of us on here are watching the solar flares, one because we love it and two so we know when the "big-event" is happening with a little advanced knowledge. So, what do we need to know for sure? Is it only the CME that will take the grid down or will it happen right away??? I have asked this same question many times in many places and end up with very confusing answers. I am sure I am not the only one that would like to know this in average person understanding. Knowing it is the CME is one thing, wondering if it could be the protons that hit earth right away, it different and yes, a heck of a lot more worrisome. Quoting: whiteangel Anyone know on the above question highlighted in red?? Quoting: whiteangel Yes its the CME. One extremely large CME could take it down, or a series of hits opening up the magnetosphere. The plasmatic energy stretches the magnetosphere and its the snapback that delivers the blow, but a well placed series of events could trigger a possible collapse as gound electrons surge in on an open 'crack' in the shield. One other problem is if we were going through a pole shift our magnetosphere could weaken to the point of massive energy saturation as our geodynamo slows. Many variables for doom!
