space weather says Bz is south. and solar ham says it's O- and has been for hours n hours. Nin do you know WTF is up w/ that?

Why are we getting such mixed data???gaah

looking on the 1min data, here is what we have right now

ACE solar conditions @ 20:45 UTC-
Solar Wind Speed : 338.3
Density: 2.6
Bz: -0.3

so the Bz is south, but not by much

perhaps its our galactic neighbors dropping in for a visit!

It's the effect of protons on the camera sensor. BTW, if you see sudden white very small dots appear and immediately disappear it is likely proton, electron or some other such particle hitting retina and making visual neurons fire. I've seen 4 of those yesterday and today.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14296220

oh thats so cool to know I see those things pretty frequently, I'm super super light sensitive. Last day or two I have noticed I see them even not looking at the sky, some of the ones I have seen almost have a blue/gray color. Could it be the same thing?
 Quoting: Mission Invisible

Those which you see when looking at the sky are probably what somebody here mentioned as "floaters". I see those too specially on a clear blue sky by the sea. They move very rapidly and there can be hundreds of them, they look a bit like spermatozoons on a microscope.

Maybe personal differences in visual cell structure explain blue, or other colors. There are RGB cells in retina + BW night-vision mode + neuron layer that pre-process their information. That's quite many options for the protons to interact with.

This is from the main page where we all get that monitor from

About the Solar X-ray status monitor
The X-ray Solar status monitor downloads data periodically from the NOAA Space Environment Center FTP server. The previous 24 hours of 5 minute Long-wavelength X-ray data from each satellite (GOES 8 and GOES 10) is analyzed, and an appropriate level of activity for the past 24 hours is assigned as follows:

On your site [link to www.n3kl.org] you report an "M" flare after the X1.4 flare.

I was wondering if you could clarify, as this was never seen on the GOES XRAY FLUX chart yesterday [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] .

Was it an error on your part in reporting, or missing data from the GOES chart ???

Thanks in advance !!

solarham has published that the image in the first picture is a comet and even circles it:

"In the latest Lasco C3 images, A comet first discovered in 1986 and named 96P/Machholz1 is visible making its way through our solar system. This particular comet will not actually dive into our Sun. For more information, visit the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. [link to www.jpl.nasa.gov]

so is it proton or comet? i'm confused now.
sorry to put bs fb links, but that's where the info comes from.
 Quoting: mtn_mang

the image i posted was protons
the image after it, that was 1st posted, was a comet
so... both ^^

i will say sorry as well for a FB link
but someone posted on the My Solar Alerts group a dif image with this same thing seen

I am sure most of you have seen this but I just recently started using it and think its pretty cool:

Solar Weather Browser 1.1.109

I tried to copy the link from the program but it wont let me so if you are interested just search it out and download the software.

Has anyone used this and is the data trustworthy and timely?

Edit to add: it WAS there! I previewed the post to make sure gaah

 Quoting: RTS REDUX

that link shows the start of the 'missing' M flare at 03:33:06

step it ahead in 15 minute intervals and you can see the progression

C2 was not updating at the time

correction: it looks like it started showing on C3 at 03:03:06 or thereabouts. Step it back another 15 minutes and it's not there

what are the odds that you would have a proton event in one frame, and just 12 minutes later have a comet (that looks like a proton) in the next image? and no images since. i find it hard to swallow, but stranger things have happened :)

Coming solar storm not likely to affect power grid

I've noticed that the last several large flares we've had have been all over MSM, this one I've heard nothing? My workers phones have been down all afternoon- AT&T,it rings once then says good bye, they aren't sure what the problem is(AT&T that is)!

I feel like my head is spinning and about to explode. CME moving faster...slower....missing data....missing frames. CME going to be stronger....weaker....etc etc.

What is the bottom line on all of this? Does anyone really know approximately when the CME will hit and how bad it is likely to be? I feel like right now I can't trust any charts or graphs or space weather reports.

NiN...anyone...what is the bottom line?

Helioviewer is probably getting a mix of processed and unprocessed C3 imagery. They take out the constant background so new CMEs are more visible I believe. The background glow they are removing here is from the big guy. Same time stamps, at least at this moment...

Unprocessed from nrl.navy ...

Processed from soho ...

Also, haven't used helioviewer much but they seem to lag behind both SDO and C2,C3 direct sites fairly often.
