just a thought...
as we are going to see a SS that had been erupting with multiple flares and CMEs last time it was facing us....
if a CME at that speed 7.6 mph were to happen after say 2 or 3 smaller, would they all get caught up in the faster moving CME?
would this create a huge fast moving CME?

That did happen just a few weeks ago, maybe month ago- all added power togeather before hitting us.( although, not as fast a cme).

This all made me think of the Carrington Event. It was suppose to have hit the earth in 17 hours, so it was very fast moving also. No one knows how big the flare was, only a bunch of guesses of around X-50 to X-100. Those guesses are when people forget that a M-flare can let loose a huge CME.

Please correct me if I am wrong here, as I am not a scientist in any way, shape or form.

If a huge CME from say a M-8 flare, was heading to earth at the speeds of that rare speed event, could it have been the cause of the Carrington Event and not some huge X50+ flare? I know a lot have to be taken into consideration when talking about a solar event that could potentially kill the grid and nothing is ever simple, but just reading what you all are saying makes me wonder.

The last X-flare had a few worried about the grid, so we all know it doesn't have to be huge to be a problem.

i would almost put money on the new age carrington not even coming from a very large solar flare
i would say to watch those M flares that produce CMEs

new sunspot region 1526 is old sunspot region 1512
new sunspot region 1528 is old sunspot region 1513
new sunspot region 1529 is likley old sunspot region 1514
old sunspot region 1515 is coming in close behind new sunspot region 1529 (old sunspot 1514)
this is the same thing it did in the last rotation
we were all watching 1514, then once 1515 popped around the corner, it said hello with a M flare
M5.6 Flare on 7/02/2012 @ 10:52 UTC - Sunspot 1515
- CME produced- ETA: July 4-5
then continued to pop off the longest running list of M flares we have seen this cycle
(see updated list on the 1st post, 1st page of this thread)

old sunspot 1515 should be rotating into view sometime tomorrow

New region 11527 [N26E66] rotated into view on July 22 and was assigned a number by SWPC the next day. The region produced a single small C flare during the day.
New region 11528 [N17E67] rotated into view on July 22.
New region 11529 [S11E70] rotated into view on July 22.

Spotted active regions not numbered or interpreted differently by NOAA/SWPC:
New region S1816 [S18E81] rotated into view with a single spot. The region appears to have been the source of a C1.4 event at 23:35 UTC.
New region S1817 [S32E06] emerged with a single tiny spot.
New region S1818 [N17W32] emerged with a few spots.

AR 11520, several days behind the southwest limb, produced a magnificent (in STEREO-A images) flare early in the day, this event was associated with a very fast (above 2000 km/s) full halo CME and an increase in proton levels at Earth.

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 22/2100Z
to 23/2100Z: Solar activity was low. Newly numbered Regions 1527
(N27E64) and 1529 (S12E71) produced the only C-class flares for the
period: a C2/1f flare at 23/1127Z and a C1 flare at 23/1700Z,
respectively. New Region 1528 (N17E67) was also numbered. Two CMEs
were observed overnight in LASCO C2 imagery. The first was
associated with a filament eruption beyond the northwest limb
beginning at 22/1248Z and the second, an asymmetric full-halo
associated with flare activity from old Region 1520 (S16, L=086)
approximately 40 degrees beyond the west limb beginning at 23/0236Z.
These CMEs are not expected to disturb the geomagnetic field.

what state are you in?
im in Michigan
when i moved here in 2000 and up till 2 years ago, every summer my family and i would complain how there was barley ever any 80+ degree days in the summer
mostly in the mid to high 70s
we would always hope for at least 1 80+ degree day so we could go to the lake and not have cold waters
we would get maybe 1 weeks worth of 80+ degree days
and that would come around the 1st week in Aug
i dont even need to go into the fact that this is not the case this year, or talk about how hot it is
cause most of us here in the states are feeling it

i was just telling my daughter this morning that you know things are super bad, when its a 82 degree day (like it is here today) and im wearing a t shirt outside talking about how glad i am its cool enough to get some yard work done
i never thought i would be saying that about a 82 degree day

Last bunch of M flares and CME's were scary enough for me. Maybe more scary because of how HOT we are on the ground here already. Power lines are maxed-out because of air conditioning units all over the valley floor, then all we need is a big blast of highly charged ejecta thrown on top!

it also happens to be the same area that the record breaking Nox 2003 X flare, the largest X flare on record came from

I don't understand everything that those in the know here, understand. But I am happy to say that I do understand what you are saying NiN. What makes me a little nuts is when the news reports on a CME (which having the news report on a CME is a fairly rare event) ... anyway it drives me a bit nuts when they say it is a 'flare' heading towards us. You'd think someone that writes the news reports would at least care enough to get the terms correct. *shrugggg* I know, in the big scheme of things, that isn't all that important, but it is just a little pet peeve of mine.

I'm guessing that you have looked for reasons why that particular part of the sun blows at that particular position again and again? Find any answers? Would NASA know? Would NASA tell if they did? tounge
Could the Sun have some sort of fracture lines (magnetic) that stay in one place in spite of it's rather plastic / elastic nature?

This all made me think of the Carrington Event. It was suppose to have hit the earth in 17 hours, so it was very fast moving also. No one knows how big the flare was, only a bunch of guesses of around X-50 to X-100. Those guesses are when people forget that a M-flare can let loose a huge CME.

Please correct me if I am wrong here, as I am not a scientist in any way, shape or form.

If a huge CME from say a M-8 flare, was heading to earth at the speeds of that rare speed event, could it have been the cause of the Carrington Event and not some huge X50+ flare? I know a lot have to be taken into consideration when talking about a solar event that could potentially kill the grid and nothing is ever simple, but just reading what you all are saying makes me wonder.

The last X-flare had a few worried about the grid, so we all know it doesn't have to be huge to be a problem.

i would say to watch those M flares that produce CMEs

Looks like I am right in my thinking. Have known for awhile now that the size of a CME isn't tied to the size of the flare. People panic when then is an X-flare more so when there are multiple M-flares. Trying to explain a CME is more difficult and harder to understand for most because there isn't a simple scale for CME's like there is for a flare.

I get excited watching the x-ray flux monitor climb on a big flare - ha, most of us on here do - and just wish there was something like that to watch for the CME's. Yes, I know we watch different things, but one monitor would make it easier. Got involved with solar events after reading "Lights Out" and have been hooked since.

Still learning and want to express a great BIG thank you to all on here that help newbies to understand the Sun better. I may not have a handle on what to look for yet on what might happen to cause our grid to burn, but I will keep on watching, learning, and know YOU all will let us know with a little bit of warning!

Denver is breaking heat records all over the place. We have now had 13 days 100 degrees or higher. This has broken the old record of 7 days. I lost track of how many days we have been 90+. It is the hottest summer so far on record. I use to spend the summers with my cousins here and loved how much cooler it was, as I was living in Phoenix at the time, and laughed at outdoor pools that were heated. Pools are being heated this year, that's for sure!!

im in Michigan
when i moved here in 2000 and up till 2 years ago, every summer my family and i would complain how there was barley ever any 80+ degree days in the summer
mostly in the mid to high 70s
we would always hope for at least 1 80+ degree day so we could go to the lake and not have cold waters
we would get maybe 1 weeks worth of 80+ degree days
and that would come around the 1st week in Aug
i dont even need to go into the fact that this is not the case this year, or talk about how hot it is
cause most of us here in the states are feeling it

i was just telling my daughter this morning that you know things are super bad, when its a 82 degree day (like it is here today) and im wearing a t shirt outside talking about how glad i am its cool enough to get some yard work done
i never thought i would be saying that about a 82 degree day

That is esp. miserable when you are not used to it. Also the altitude there makes the heat/sunshine worse.

yeah, I agree... but what I find strange is that some M flares (mostly long duration) produce more powerful CMEs than X flares when by definition X flares release a lot more energy. How can the extra energy (like the one which happened yesterday at 3400 kn/s) in M flares be explained?
