A large CME from the far-side seen on STEREO Ahead:

STEREO Behind EUVI movie seems to show a large filament eruption (maybe two?):

Good stuff Hugh,I'd just come back in and noticed the CME on Stereo Ahead,it is quite a large ejection indeed.

Looking at the Behind EUVI I think I see the event beginning from the Sunspot Region in the South and then sweeping North either along a Filament Channel or is possibly a cascading event similar to a Solar Tsunami...Do you know for sure that there was a Filament in that Region Hugh?

I'm wondering if perhaps there was a small(ish) CH in the North/Mid-North Above the Sunspot Region that seems to have begun the event as well as a possible Filament as the eruption appears to be quite large and violent - A CH in the same Region would definitely play into helping the cascading type effect that made the Filament erupt in tandem with the Lower Sunspot Flare-up that(Imo)looks to have begun the chain of events - Are any of you also seeing the event happening from the South Up?

I don't see what the fuss is about. The bright object on STEREO B HI1 is Earth and the white line is the bleeding of saturated pixels. What do you see that's so perplexing?

You might want to familiarize yourselves with this:

Really? Have you looked at the slideshow for Stereo Behind HI1 with dates from the 17th through the 20th? I'm not talking about celestial bodies - it's a dark region that seems to grow (get closer) as the slides progress. [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] Just look, please.

It may be nothing, but I'd love a more expert opinion than my own. Looks odd to me.

It would take two seconds for someone on this thread (with more experience than the casual watchers like myself) to confirm or deny that there is an anomaly. I really didn't think it was a big deal to ask that of Hugh or someone else on this thread.

To recap, it's the slideshow for Stereo Behind HI1 dates 20121217 through 20121220 showing a dark region that seems to grow (get closer) as the slides progress.

I'd prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt. I highly doubt he monitors this thread every minute of every day. There are others who watch this thread as well, many of whom have devoted a great deal of time to self-educating on these matters. Perhaps one of them will chime in. Patience, grasshopper.

Also,on the Stereo Ahead [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] we can see that beginning around 06:00(ish)UT on the Left of the image(the area that is more or less Earth facing)a CME begins from the bright Bunsen Burner but due to missing Hours its' full effect cannot be seen as the timestamp jumps from 12(ish)to 17:00(ish)with a few more captures missing just after the beginning of the event that started at around 06:00(ish) - There must have been more Ejecta than we can see on the MPeg as that area that it came from blooms quite large before Ejecting - That is unless it just magically disappeared!?

Does anybody else see that also [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] ?

Howdy, AC. It took more than two seconds, but I don't see anything unusual. If you "step" thru the images you'll notice a 12-hour gap from 23:30z on the 17th to 11:30z on the 18th (when it appears darker). You can also see the dark area isn't growing; it appears dark, then lighter, then darker again in accordance to solar activity. The purpose of the HI1 imager is to specifically look for diffuse plasma ejections (hot electrified gases) between the Sun and Earth; it's not very good for planetary or star observations. The dark area shows a lack of hot plasma during that time span. Capiche?

hugh i have been looking for anything that looks like what is going on in HI1 and i see a blue...not black like is showing now.
been looking back over the years i see when the sun is gone quiet do not see black areas. is the sun just that quiet now?
if you have seen this before please post the time and dates so we can check.

i wonder if the imager setting changed.

i was just looking at streo behind HI120111201 to 20111220....
way cool and will send many folks thinking odd things happened....just comets and planets....cool optic flares though.

I'm more than sure you noticed that he completely ignored your claim of the dark region. Because it is foreign to him.
 Quoting: Da fuq

Take it easy Da Fuq - Hugh may be trying to find out for all you know, these things can take time you know.

Anyhow,I have been checking around a little myself to give a explanation for the apparent Dark patch(just because we see something it doesn't always mean it is a true image)anyway,it could be a Number of different reasons,I'll start by posting the scheduled events for the Instruments, here -

Scheduled activities for Week 51:

M Dec 17 (352)
T Dec 18 (353) Ahead: SECCHI stepped calibration roll, 10:15 UT
W Dec 19 (354)
T Dec 20 (355) Behind: Momentum dump, 21:00 UT
F Dec 21 (356)
S Dec 22 (357)
S Dec 23 (358)

So that is for Behind for Today but I think it may be something else, for instance 'Background Subtraction' -

Snipped -

'The instrumental background is derived from an examination of images over several weeks both before and after the observation. Thus, for the most recent images, only preliminary backgrounds can be applied. This sometimes causes too much to be subtracted from some regions, making these areas dark. To get around this problem, the coronagraph images are regenerated at intervals of 15 and 35 days after the observation, when better backgrounds are available' [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

But it could be caused by a Number of different reasons, you could try looking and reading through this [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] to understand better what goes into producing these images.

Or I could show you other examples of the exact same thing happening at other times like this [link to 1.bp.blogspot.com] <--- That's from March 12th 2012 [link to astroblogger.blogspot.co.uk] .

Here is the video of that -

You'll notice at the end of the video the Dark patch disappears, this leads me to believe that it is simply due to a non-fully processed image,it can take up to 35 Days to have the images fully processed and corrected for any subtractions/mixed instrument images etc.

This is all part of having the ability to see almost raw data in real time.

Try not to be so hasty to jump down someones throat because they didn't yet try and answer your ponderation, cool?

Cool.

now some folks might seen a interesting shadow that appears near the end of that search.

i think you hit it...
raw data is raw data....no cover up....just low res raw and as real time as we get data. and it is just missing some info on what the imager recorded. info that is filled in with the full res image which takes more time.

this is normal in the video industry.
if i am working on a 4K video image...which is not easy if some what impossible to edit....i do the edit in a low res version....then apply all effects and edit points to the 4K raw video file.

these darker regions seen on STEREO HI1 have been seen many times before.

they are areas of subtraction
[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]
"dark regions caused by an imprecise background subtraction. These dark regions should be filled in when the image is reprocessed after 35 days."

here are a few images from earlier in the year where we can see the same "dark" regions on STEREO HI1

"doom" comes in many fashions, in many ways, to all of us eventually. Today someone is sitting beside a young child with cancer, the 26 families of the CT tragedy, losing a job, house...the list goes on and on for "doom".

Many are in there own "doom" this day.

People see doom in very different ways and sadly when it is finally time for world wide doom they will be crying out for rescue.

It does seem odd that so many are searching for the end. Just regular every day folk who have not had to endure the above mentioned "doom" are seeking rescue from this world.

Solar wind at 9999.9 km/s alone

from the top of the page

"Missing data values: Density and Speed = -9999.9, Temp. = -1.00e+05"

when we see -9999.9, those are times with missing data
