i read that many of the telegraphers shut down and disconnected from the transmission lines. this did not stop the wires and poles from burning.

take a coil from a motor and remove the + side from a source.
will it still pick up electrons from a strong electric field?

i think the issue here is the ground level currents.

i can not run long video cable in parallel with the feeder cables (the main power line for the whole show) back in the day we sent analog, or a varying voltage, to control the red. blue, and green levels. we now use fiber and other digital means so any unwanted electrons do not effect the 0 or 1 of the digital signal.

i have seen just how these electromagnetic fields can and will mess things up.
just put it at a much higher level and all transmission line could never be cut off to render them unaffected.

Thanks, Psyoptics, you're correct about the ground currents. There have been plans proposed (by the Nat'l Science Foundation I believe) for Ground Induced Currents (GICs) mitigation, but I'm certain that they were never funded or implemented. A big concern is nuclear generating plants which can't be shut down quickly. Geomagnetic substorms are unpredictable and GICs can spike wildly without warning.

Some interesting rainy-day reading if you have the time are these two PDFs on the potential effects of Geomagnetic Storms. The first a paper on SOLAR STORM THREAT ANALYSIS and covers a wide-ranging field of topics in very accessible language:

GICs can cause transformers to be driven into half-cycle saturation where the core of the transformer is magnetically saturate on alternate half-cycles. Only a few amperes are needed to disrupt transformer operations. A GIC level induced voltage of 1 to 2 volts per kilometer and 5 amperes in the neutral of the high-voltage windings is sufficient to drive grounded wye-connected distribution transformers into saturation in a second or less. During geomagnetic storms, GIC currents as high as 184 amps have been measured in the United States in the neutral leg of transformers. The largest GIC measured thus far was 270 amperes during a geomagnetic storm in Southern Sweden on April 6, 2000.

If transformer half-cycle saturation is allowed to continue, stray flux can enter the transformer structural tank members and current windings. Localized hot spots can develop quickly inside the transformers tank as temperatures rise hundreds of degrees within a few minutes. Temperature spikes as high as 750° F have been measured. As transformers switches 60 times per second between being saturated and unsaturated, the normal hum of a transformer becomes a raucous, cracking whine. Regions of opposed magnetism as big as a fist in the core steel plates crash about and vibrate the 100-ton transformers which are nearly the size of a small house. This punishment can go on for hours for the duration of the geomagnetic storm.

one a side note.
the electricity does not flow from the "+" side but the "-" side.
so a generator is not creating electrons but the the need for them.
the earth has them.....ergo ...the term EARTH ground.

I will take this comment containing the 0 and 1 "bit" to post this link about digital physics. I was thinking of starting a thread on a discussion of it as I think it is fascinating. However, I don't think only a machine can compute reality, I think a sentient organism can do it. We will all probably be needing to expand the box of how we conceive things and digital physics may be one possible route out.

4. Adverse Effects on Human Judgment and Behavior
Geomagnetic storms appear to affect human behavior, judgments and decisions about risk. Research has documented links to depression, enhanced anxiety, sleep disturbances, altered moods mainly affecting abstract judgment especially judgment of risk, overly cautious behavior, and greater incidences of psychiatric admissions. A study by Kay found a 36.2% increase in male hospital admissions diagnosed with the depressed phase of manic- depressive illness correlated with the second week following geomagnetic storms compared to quiet periods. A study by Novikova and Ryvkin found geomagnetic storm correlates to psychotic outbursts in patients in a Moscow mental institution and to reports of hallucinations. Other studies showed that pilots experienced high levels of anxiety and decreased functional activity of the central nervous system resulting in a sharp decline of flying skills during geomagnetic storms. A study by Kuleshova et al. showed the daily number of hospitalizations of patients with mental disorders during geomagnetic storms nearly doubled when compared to quiet period.

To put a human face on this effect consider the plight of a bright young girl in Ottawa County, Ohio who witnessed first hand the effects of the Great solar storm of September 1-2, 1859.

The Columbus, Ohio Statesman newspaper had run a short article about a sixteen year old girl 'of considerable intelligence and prepossessing appearance', who had been taken into custody by the Sheriff of Ottawa County. Her agitated state necessitated that she be moved to the lunatic asylum. The conclusion drawn from this, and no doubt her utterances, implied that she had become deranged from viewing the aurora borealis a short time ago. She was convinced that all of this spectacular auroral activity meant that the world was soon to come to an end.

i started out as a lighting designer...did a lot of work as a production electrician in the theatre...i was the person who made sure all departments of the show had good and stable power. good grounds. and no interference from say the lighting system to the sound or video. i would have to set up generators.
then i moved into the video area and have been here ever since. my father was an electrical engineer and worked for bell labs.
in my years i have had to trouble shoot many power issues and had to learn much.
little things which could become show stoppers....like ground differential...
say the sound system is feeding from a distro box in front and the video department is tied in in the back....different boxes...sometime have different grounds and transformers.
if you meter the ground from the sound guys to the ground from the video guys i have seen .5 to 1 volt. sometime it just a differential from the ground and the neutral.
now this seems small but it is major in electronics and will cause a ground loop or a 60 Hz hummmm. not good for those sound guys.
but the poor video folks are way screwed. with noise rolling down through the image all night long.

remember all the electrons do come from the ground, or earth.

could this be from freq. and waves reacting in to human mind?
like the experiment with people being removed from the sun and all it freq's. the subjects get ill....then they are ok when these freq's were restored. both by bring the subjects out of the bunker or feed the bunker with those freq's.

I am still not sure what exactly you are saying here???

Are you saying the substations and transformers create the neutral? Then you say the return for the excess electron are not returning....returning from where???

I am assuming that you are stating this because of your electrical experience but I am just not following never being an electrical engineer.
