SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily) | |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 31662450 United States 02/02/2013 09:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Little teensy-weensy sub-atomic particles. Haha, just joking whiteangel...things are getting interesting in geospace, too. Here's NOAA's SW Forecast- Solar Wind .24 hr Summary... The high speed stream that began late yesterday remained in effect. During the period, solar wind speed at ACE rose from around 400 km/s to end in the upper 400 to lower 500 km/s range. Bz varied between +/- 10 nT and total field reached about 12 nT during the onset of the high speed stream. By the end of the day, Bz had settled to +/- 5 nT and total field has diminished to about 5 nT. The solar sector orientation was generally toward (negative) with the exception of a brief excursion into the positive sector between 02/1500-1600 UTC. ACE spacecraft data indicated the low energy particle flux was still rising at the time of this report indicating the CME had not yet arrived. .Forecast... Solar wind speed is expected to remain enhanced through the forecast period. The current equatorial coronal hole is expected to be followed shortly by a negative polarity northern hemisphere coronal hole. The solar wind will further be complicated by the expected arrival on day 1 (03 Feb) of a glancing blow from the 31 January CME. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Thank you Hugh. I noticed here the small CME [link to www.solarham.net] but didn't think it was enough to really make a change in the magnetosphere, even if it isn't a big change. I know you aren't into all the "other" stuff, at least not on this thread but with the time frames that BendingLight has been talking about, I have kept the [link to ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov] link up and noticed the change a little while ago. Been out with the flu so haven't been keeping up like I should be, still playing catch up, still trying to get well, so brain isn't on full thrusters yet! Thanks again! Well have some chicken soup and get well soon! The flus have been bio-weapon-nasty this year and I was out of it for a few days meself. Prayers and Blessings, dear. |

Comet Pan-STARRS is set to become a naked eye object in March, followed by possibly-Great Comet ISON in November. Now we must add to that list green Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6). “Comet Lemmon is putting on a great show for us down in the southern hemisphere,” reports John Drummond, who sent us a picture from Gisborne, New Zealand: “I took the picture on Jan. 23rd using a 41 cm (16 in) Meade reflector,” says Drummond. “It is a stack of twenty 1 minute exposures.” That much time was required for a good view of the comet’s approximately 7th-magnitude coma (“coma”=cloud of gas surrounding the comet’s nucleus). Lemmon’s green color comes from the gases that make up its coma. Jets spewing from the comet’s nucleus contain cyanogen (CN: a poisonous gas found in many comets) and diatomic carbon (C2). Both substances glow green when illuminated by sunlight in the near-vacuum of space. Discovered on March 23rd 2012 by the Mount Lemmon survey in Arizona, Comet Lemmon is on an elliptical orbit with a period of almost 11,000 years. This is its first visit to the inner solar system in a very long time. The comet is brightening as it approaches the sun; light curves suggest that it will reach 2nd or 3rd magnitude, similar to the stars in the Big Dipper, in late March when it approaches the sun at about the same distance as Venus (0.7 AU). Northern hemisphere observers will get their first good look at the comet in early April; until then it is a target exclusively for astronomers in the southern hemisphere. –Space Weather [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] Awesome hi-res, long-exposure image of Comet Lemmon: [link to spaceweather.com] |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 31662450 United States 02/02/2013 10:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Could that weird slo-mo CME be from a filament we can't see? Those are usually eruptions, so I am scratching my head also. Quoting: whiteangel Well the first thing I thought of was that shape-shifting prominence on the SE limb, but when I looked it was still there. Next I went back about 8 hours looking for a large limb eruption from old '54 and only found a small one which was way too late to account for this CME. My best theory (until I see a better one) is that two enormous helmet streamers, one from old '54 and one from the southern hemisphere, were somehow magnetically entangled until the field broke down and they escaped the sun. The weird thing is that most of this took place so far up in the corona (actually BEYOND it) that it was outside the field of view of the SDO imagers and the GONG Network scopes! I checked the STEREO B EUVI movie before they took it down and didn't see anything huge there either. The best instrument for seeing this is probably the STEREO Cor 1 coronagraphs, but the lo-res images they post online are absolutely atrocious (unusable). It takes a few days for them to post the processed pics and by then we're already 3 or 4 events down the road...ahhhh. I'm just curious enough to back and look some more. Anyway, we'll soon see what Old Wimpy brings to the table now. Did this event unleash his super powers? Or did this totally seal him in kryptonite? And what about the South? Will it ever rise again?.....Stay tuned, Sol-fans. SDO 304 image of nice limb-flare from old '54 w/some ejecta: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Latest AIA 171a image-Wow, look at that east limb!
