It must be tremendous if indeed from 71. Take a look at it's current position.

You'll also notice a significant uptick in SRs.

NOAA has numbered 1 of the 3 new active regions then broke for lunch, LOL. It's hard work donchya know? Perhaps the others will be numbered before quittin' time. AR1680 is in the far SE (S28E42) and it's a recently-born, growing region.

And in the northeast we have the shrinking alpha spot, old 1665, still hangin' in there.

NOAA Discussion-
.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was low. The largest x-ray event of the period was a C2
flare at 24/1435 UTC. This flare originated from old Region 1678 that
had rotated well past the west limb, yet was still captured by the
GOES-15 SXI imagery. A new spot region, 1680 (S28E42) Dao/Beta, was
numbered during the period. The only other numbered spot regions, Region
1675 (N13W83), a Hsx/Alpha spot group, and Region 1676 (S18W32), a
Axx/Alpha spot group, continued to decay. There were two coronal mass
ejections (CMEs) observed during the period, however neither appear to
be Earth-directed.

They were both pretty apparent early this morning ... with all the NASA cut backs, maybe cleaning the bathrooms interferes with their primary duties..

Howdy, 66, yes I was watching them develop yesterday and was surprised that NOAA's Solar Region Summary only list 2 spots last night (75 & 76). The Heliographic EUVI images also show 2 or 3 new AR's have formed far-side south-east and should be coming around to join these in 2-3 days.

Sunspot 1665 aka 1681-2?

Just rotating into view today. Rather active/large region (probably 3-4 earths wide). 40 millionths by visual estimate.

Possibility for M class and even x class "earth directed" activity in the next few days, depending on if she holds up as she has...

1670 is beautiful...

Anyone have any other information on the impact GOES took today? I'm interested if any sites have updated data on the event.

Good morning ... I keep cjecking, and again as Madajas pointed out Solen is accrediting the activity on GOES as a huge farside event from 71, although STEREO is showing a CME from the NE corner rather than the NW for that time frame.

Something is not adding up, unless I'm missing something ???

since 1678 developed quickly, but far west on the disc and still managed to pop off a few before leaving completely; what do u guys think are the odds of these new, quickly developing regions on the eastern side will make up for the disappointment?

i am purely basing this off the characteristics of 1678 with the speedy development it had, hoping these new ones will follow suit.

If I have personally learned anything with the technologies available to watch this particular cycle, it is that very little is predictable with any certainty.

The pendulum keeps swinging from unprecedented solar activity to being a prelude to a grand minimum.

So chances are 50-50

Talk about an eerie "coincidence". I have had that link bookmarked and check it daily since BL's first post. It has been "normal", but today is off. Completely off from what I have seen the last 2 months. And there's was no solar activity that would be causing this. It will be interesting to see what the "official" answer is.
