.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was very low. Old Region 1678 (N08, L=069), now almost
two days beyond the east limb, produced a long duration B8 x-ray event
at 25/1151 UTC associated with a non-Earth-directed coronal mass
ejection (CME). Three new spot groups were numbered: Region 1680
(S28E35, Dao/beta), Region 1681 (N16E59, Hsx/alpha), and 1682 (S18E09,
Dro/beta-gamma). Region 1682 was in a growth phase during the period and
showed a beta-gamma magnetic configuration with mixed polarities evident
within its intermediate portion. The remaining two spot groups were
unremarkable. There was no Earth-directed CME activity during the
period.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be very low during the period (26 - 28
Feb), with a chance for C-class flares and a slight chance for an
M-class flare, based primarily on the growth and magnetic complexity in
Region 1682.

The new fast-growing active region 1682 is sandwiched between two coronal holes. Will this feed into its growth and strength? Or will the CHs sap its strength and retard growth? Stay tuned, Suntards, as we'll soon know the answer.

I don't think I've seen such widespread coronal holes before. We could be in for a gusty solar wind week.

Coronal holes are the darkest and least active regions of the Sun, as observed both on the solar disk and above the solar limb. Coronal holes are associated with rapidly expanding open magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind.(snip)

(unsnip)...For example, the importance of kinetic plasma physics and turbulence in coronal holes has been affirmed by surprising measurements from the UVCS instrument on SOHO that heavy ions are heated to hundreds of times the temperatures of protons and electrons. These observations point to specific kinds of collisionless Alfvén wave damping (i.e., ion cyclotron resonance), but complete theoretical models do not yet exist.

Good morning all


SO states the solar activity was from a SW filament eruption yesterday.

I didn't and still can't find an earth-facing filament eruption anywhere yesterday, and stranger yet, is the fact that he didn't post the actual footage of it happening, as is the norm.

Anyone ??? Not saying it didn't happen, just didn't see it, and still can't .

There was an eruption from the South pole area around 17:00, but that was clearly after the event had begun, and not much plasma seemed to be released.



And a nice flare at around 21:12 from an unnumbered SR just to the West of 1676, that didn't seem to be picked up on GOES ?????



To be honest I was hoping it was true, as it does not seem plausible that a flare from the far side of the sun created a day long LDE on GOES.

1678 is dead center on the STEREO A image. the backside CME im seeing is from the new spot to the far right of 1678

Yes,I'd venture to say that is a misdiagnosis for sure,I take it he meant this one [link to www.sidc.oma.be] (same one you show,I think!?)personally I think the slight disturbance was a result of this [link to www.sidc.oma.be] tickling us a tinee bit as it passed.

Sorry,I just lemoned(made a booboo)He meant the LDE B Flare - That was from 1678's massive heating of the Lower Corona we saw after it rounded the West limb,I think.

I don't subscribe to all of what S0 puts out there but I am willing to let stuff fly as the sheer amount of Folks that his channel has orientated the collective gaze again toward (the only true reality show in town,the Earth and the Heavens)is worth the trade off,Imo

i just got the chance to look at the STEREO A
looking at the STEREO A EUVI 195 movie for all of today, there appears to be a very large coronal hole open up just below 1678 today

I am getting spacial confusion Today,it is annoying me as I rely on that motor function to mentally process the EUVI Images and relative locations(don't mean Glp Uncles location) : )

But yes,we can see the broiling of the Lower Corona by 1678/71(combo mess)witnessed as it began to round the limb a few Days back may have caused a new CH to be torn open after blowing off a CME or two,here [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] you mean that NiNz(the onset is quite rapid)and this [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] on the Left?

Not sure at the moment as to the possible mechanisms at play there NiNz but I will try and see if I can come up with a succinct,plausible explanation if you want/need it

Thank you for those,I have read a little about the project/s previously and seen a couple bits of talks given and find their work of really great importance in the scheme of things(Climate forcing etc.)so again,Thankus Maximus

I have been a little dismayed(not really shocked though)at the attempted brushing off/poo-pooing of some of their experiments conclusions when I have brought up some of them with folks like Dr.Kieth Strong(you know Drkstrong YT channel?)esp. the Cosmic Rays/Cloud seeding potential.

There are many poo-pooers of some of their conclusions I have encountered,I think primarily this is due to the logger-head of CO2 vs. Solar driven Climate Politics.

anyone up for putting together a play by play on solar activity over the last 24hrs?
we have a lot of CMEs seen and some new sunspots forming

and look at the northern pole! and that blog (for lack of a better word) of plasma just hovering there in the south west
