Howdy, just checkin' for a quick update. AR1723 is now directly Earth-facing and is the only beta-gamma group left on the disk. Oh, and it's growing.

24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was at low levels for the past 24 hours. Regions 1719
(N09W64) produced the largest flare of the period, a C3/Sf flare at
16/2132 UTC. Region 1723 (S17E09) showed renewed signs of life as the
two main leader spots began to combine, the trailer and intermediate
spots showed slight growth and separation, and it regained its
beta-gamma magnetic complexity. Region 1722 (S17W36) showed slight
growth in the trailer spots but maintained its beta magentic structure.
The other regions on the disk were either stable or decaying. No
Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed.

FAST-GROWING SUNSPOT: Two days ago, sunspot AR1723 did not exist. Now it sprawls nearly 100,000 km (8 Earth-diameters) across the sun's southern hemisphere. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is monitoring the sunspot's rapid expansion.

AR1723 has a 'beta-gamma' magnetic field that harbors energy for M-class solar flares. If the magnetic field is changing as quickly as the underlying sunspot, it could become unstable and explode. Stay tuned for updates, as Earth would be in the line of fire

I can't pm you -- I tried -- it said I can't access doing pm's since I'm not an upgraded sub or something to that effect.

I also used my 5 cents worth of karma (very low karma yet lol) to send a green to mtn_mang (and tentatively to Shadasonic...)

To mtn_mang, I hit 'return/send' before finishing my message, not quite savvy with the technicalities of this forum/thread yet. Just had time to say 'hi' and hit send... grrrr... Anyhoo. Hope you don't get any reds for a looong while : )

To Shada, I started thumbing you green too, but couldn't, it said I had already thumbed this sub once in the present week. So you get a "virtual" green from me today too : )

yes i found the discrepancy with the distance and found the red shift issue, am already trying to find an earthquake match for its last flare up in 2001.

it was flaring between november 2000 and april 2001, there were significant earthquakes during this period. would be very interesting to plot the whipple data against the earthquake record.

I understand that you can't change the parameters of your watch on a whim, but it seems like a possibility that the "open" coronal hole streams may warrant a watch all to themselves. Jan 5 -2013 brought that to my attention. Today got me thinking... Any thoughts???Tx.

We have seen that many times, and if you remember from the quake watch update on April 14th I said that others have taken up this task as well - some of them are solely focused on coronal holes... they are all very happy. I don't consider going from 78% to 76% to be a huge deal, especially with only 39% of the days called for watch. I feel like if you flipped a coin and got 76% with that random 50/50 chance each way it would be suprising over 98 days. Maybe you can keep it in mind going forward

I feel it is important for you to continue as is because on a long term basis the corona holes & planetary alignments may be intricately interrelated. Maybe the planetary positions affect conditional aspects of the Sun. At some point it should become mathematically clear.

Absolutely! I'm going with blaming the Markarian 421 outburst for this quake burst; for reasons stated but I wouldn't have thought to go looking for the wild cards, if it had happened within your watch. It provided clues to find other potential large quake causes, meaning even when it looks like a miss, it can point to more reasons why your right. If you get what I mean.

sunspot AR 1723 downgrading in size, becoming smaller today.
