SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily) | |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 37348904 United States 04/21/2013 01:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good catch, shadasonic, I find that to be unexpected. I'm leaning toward the massive far-side CME as the cause opposed to 1726. That region's produced a dozen or so low C-flares; no big CMEs or anything to cause an SEP event. GOES Proton flux: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] BINGO! Earth's magnetic footpoint is actually a bit beyond the west limb! [link to iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov] Some of the energetic particles from that CME could have travelled towards Earth via the Parker Spiral magnetic fields. However, we could soon see a really big proton event if 1726 produces a big flare before reaching the limb. I think it could explode at any time now. |

The C2 image I posted was from 08:00 UTC. The STEREO A EUVI seems to show yet another eruption further far-side (1718 again?) and "dimming event": [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Nice find, all of those decaying sunspots are freakin' exploding far-side now. WTF? By the way all kinds of weird stuff can be often seen on the SOHO coronagraph images. The specialized optics were designed to image the hot plasma ejections and are not very good or reliable instruments to study planets, stars, or whatever. I wouldn't get too excited about it, it's most likely a bright background star or group of stars crowded into one or two pixels....just sayin'. |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 37348904 United States 04/21/2013 06:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | NOAA discusses minor proton event at geosynchronous orbit- Energetic Particle .24 hr Summary... The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit increased slightly above background levels beginning at approximately 21/1005 UTC but remained below threshold level (10 pfu) at the time of this report. The enhancement was likely triggered by a flare beyond the west limb from old Region 1719 (N11, L=077) which could be seen in STEREO Ahead EUVI 195 data beginning at 21/0725 UTC. .Forecast... The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels. A slight chance for a greater than 10 MeV proton event exists for the forecast period (21-23 Apr) due to both the recent proton enhancement as well as the potential for further increase in significant flare activity from Region 1726. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] GOES Proton Flux monitor: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Sound familiar? LOL! NOAA Again- Solar Activity .24 hr Summary... Solar activity was at low levels due to several C-class flares by Region 1726 (N12W15, Eki/beta-gamma-delta). The largest of the period was a C3/Sf flare at 21/0109 UTC. Region 1726 exhibited moderate growth in area and spot count during the period and continued to develop in magnetic complexity. Multiple deltas were observed in the larger central spot with apparent rotation within the central umbrae. GOES X-ray flux background has subsequently increased in part due to the increased activity with this region. A filament eruption was observed in SDO/AIA 304 imagery beginning at 20/1741 UTC slightly north of Region 1723 (S20W50, Cso/beta), however no associated CME could be ascertained in LASCO C2 imagery. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period. AR1726 magnetogram showing B-G-D complexity- :4/21-1726magneto: |

If not, check this page which covers a host of issues and questions about SOHO images- 12. What are those dark areas that I sometimes see in the images ? The dark areas are image processing artifacts and not a sensor problem. The images on the WWW page are processed by removing a background light model. The background light model is about 99% of the light received by the CCD and consists of instrumental stray light as well as coronal light. The amount of background light varys according to SOHO's orbit. When the model is wrong we subtract off too much light and we see a dark area. Correcting the model always lags the actual data. We are always using last month's model with today's data. So about two weeks to a month after today we will build the right model for today. The real-time images are a rough cut at the image processing and are intended for planning purposes for the next day's observations and for public outreach. The subtraction is particularly obvious during a spacecraft roll manuvuer when the spacecraft has rolled but our background light model has not rolled. Region 1726 (N12W22, Ekc/beta-gamma-delta) kept activity at low levels with over a dozen C-class flares in the past 24 hours. The largest of the period was a C4/Sf flare at 21/1839 UTC. Region 1726 grew in area and spot count while maintaining its magnetic complexity. Region 1727 (N25E31) lost some intermediate spots and Region 1723 (S20W57) was stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period. .Forecast... Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class flares (R1 or greater on the NOAA scale) through the forecast period. A slight chance for an X-class event (R3 or greater) exists for the first two days (22-23 Apr). Geospace- .24 hr Summary... The geomagnetic field was quiet. .Forecast... The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet until mid to late day 1 (22 Apr). Then, a glancing blow from the 18 Apr CME is may cause unsettled periods. By midday on day 2 (23 Apr), a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream is expected to become geoeffective bringing unsettled to active periods with a slight chance for minor storm periods which will persist through the end of the forecast period. Usually the shower is mild (10-20 meteors per hour) but unmapped filaments of dust in the comet's tail sometimes trigger outbursts ten times stronger.
