A large filament eruption originating in the SW near AR1777 has produced a Hyder flare and a CME.

CME somewhat Earth-directed but appears to be too far below the ecliptic to be geo-effective. However we may see a ripple or two like today's 'stealth' CME arrival.

IRIS to Train its Eye on the Sun's Lower Atmosphere

>From a high perch more than 380 miles above Earth, the IRIS observatory will take a close look at how energy moves in the sun's interface region.

The sun's visible surface -- its photosphere -- is a scorching 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Above it is the upper corona, burning in the millions of degrees. Between the photosphere and the upper corona lies the interface region. While this area is believed to have a major influence on the sun-Earth relationship, it hasn't yet been studied in detail, and scientists aim to change that with this mission.

Ultraviolet emissions streaming from the sun affect Earth's climate as well as the space environment that surrounds us. The IRIS spacecraft, with its ultraviolet telescope, is equipped to take high-resolution photos and spectrometry, offering a look at how energy and plasma move through the varying layers of the solar atmosphere. When combined with 3D modeling, these observations could greatly increase our understanding of our nearest star.

NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spacecraft will soon begin its two-year mission aboard an Orbital Sciences Pegasus XL rocket launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. From its position in polar, sun-synchronous orbit, the 403-pound IRIS satellite will investigate the sun's lower atmosphere in unprecedented detail.

Looks like it's tapering off at C4.0.

I think IRIS is gonna prove the electric model subsequently.

Nice catch Hugh on the hyder flare, that filament let go and reformed just the other day. Closer to the equator and that would have been one to watch.

Nice job there, V! Seems like the few spots we have now are trying their best to keep us entertained.

The second CME from the C4.4 is now visible on STEREO Ahead....almost an identical trajectory, too (it should miss Earth low).

Upon a second look at the STEREO A images, it appears that a small portion of the CME outflow may possibly become geo-effective. I'm calling it a 'glancing blow' at most.

The earth does not shut down sun spots, this is where S.O is flawed in his thinking.

Then how would he push or back something as nonsense as the tiny earth affecting the entire earth facing disc?

Are we supposed to get slammed with strong solar stuff this weekend? Solar winds or a flare? I'm not informed compared to the experts on this thread.

I've noticed when we get hit with x-class or m-class flares I don't sleep as much.

We are getting hit by solar wind. So far, this is a "weak" impact.
