Which Way is North?
Compasses tell us which way is North on the Earth. It's easy, the needle with the big N points toward the North Pole of the Earth. Other directions can be read off the dial, like a primitive GPS!
Compasses work because the Earth has a simple magnetic field with the magnetic poles in almost the same place as the rotation poles. And the compass needle points along only the part of the magnetic field that is horizontal.
The Sun also rotates and has North and South poles. But compasses aren't very useful on the Sun. The solar magnetic field is very complicated and is usually vertical rather than horizontal. Now North and South refer to magnetic fields pointing out of and into the surface.
In an HMI magnetogram (such as one from July 15, 2013 on the left) we color the outward pointing fields as white and inward as black. The weak fields are grey. So it is probably better to think of the solar field as outward (+) and inward (-) rather than North and South. That way you won't use the magnetic field to give directions on the surface of the Sun. That cme is right at the end of the vid. Its a good one. Solarsoft is saying its 1791 at about 10:00UTC.

Forecast says CME was northerly directed and have the cme at about 06:00UTC from 1791. I still think the second half of that CME at 10:00UTC will affect earth.

The loops arc up over the sun from one polarity to the other. As the sun's material continues to flow under the surface, the positive and negative poles slip past each other - not unlike tectonic plates on Earth slipping past each other - though on the sun, of course, the material is a hot gas, not hard rock.

Sun's Loops are Displaying an Optical Illusion
The Sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, has posed an enduring mystery. Why is it so hot? The Sun's visible surface is only 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, but as you move outward the temperature shoots up to millions of degrees. It's like a campfire that feels hotter the farther away you stand.
To understand how the corona is heated, some astronomers study coronal loops. These structures are shaped like an upside-down U and show where magnetic field lines are funneling solar gases or plasma.

It seems 1793 is sparking, one filament may have lifted from the southwest(earth facing), and we've got a whiplike prominent event on the far central east!


The whip like filament release on the east was triggered by this nice LDE C2.3 from Mr. soon to be numbered region.

CH stream coupled with a mild CME, could get us a decent event.

OMG, that was gorgeous, both videos. Shows me lightening is sentient, as is everything in the universe. It was like watching a baby and its mother connect/reconnect. It also shows how lightening is an integral part of earth, like the nervous system that conducts electrical impulses through the body. More evidence of the spiritual law of as above so below. It actually made me cry, it was so beautiful, really expanding me and my understanding of more things. Thanks, Psy, glad you posted.
