Howdy , Mtn!, don't you dare apologize. How 'bout a 'new rule'- don't be superstitious, haha.

It seems 1817 is waking up with a C3.6.

Yeah, after watching the SDO movie and realizing it is at 60 degrees W. Longitude, we'll almost certainly get a taste of this. So I retract my "not geoeffective' statement. Still it will take awhile before the coronagrah data comes in. Of course these events invariably happen during STEREO's 'snooze-time', haha.

This video from the 10th makes a good point about the 'Official SS Number' and also predicts that filament liftoff within a week and its geoeffectiveness. As I've stated before, I think the 10cm radio flux is the most accurate and objective measurement of overall solar activity, but traditions die hard in science, LOL. The different measuring rods can be found here in one graph:

GLOBAL COLDING IN PROGRESS-

Analysis of NOAA's Annual Climate Report reveals 'spin', incompetence, mis-interpretation of data, contradictions, and Carbon Tunnel-vision Syndrome. (I made that last one up, LOL).

"“To no one’s surprise, the report gives the reader the impression that warming is galloping ahead out of control,” writes Gosselin. “But their data shows just the opposite.”

Although the NOAA report noted that in 2012, “the Arctic continues to warm” with “sea ice reaching record lows,” it also stated that the Antarctica sea ice “reached a record high of 7.51 million square miles” on Sept. 26, 2012.

And the latest figures for this year show that there’s been a slowdown of melting in the Arctic this summer as well, with temperatures at the North Pole well below normal for this time of year. Meteorologist Joe Bastardi calls it “the coldest ever recorded.”(snip)

On August 7th, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten quoted Irish solar expert Ian Elliott predicting that lower levels of sunspot activity over the next few years “indicates that we may be on the path to a new little ice age.”

If you think scientists just couldn’t get any more incompetent, then think again. NOAA scientists even appear to believe that cold events are now signs of warming,” Gosselin points out.

[link to www.cnsnews.com]

It's comforting to know that NOAA's incompetence isn't confined to their Space Weather Prediction Center. Gotta go now and stock up on firewood before the price goes up, LOL.

NOTE TO NOAA, NASA, and LOCKHEED- hey, I'm under-employed, so when the shill-checks start coming in you'll find I can be a lot more understanding (by the way I also accept bit-coin and silver bullion). Jes' kidding, folks...yuk-yuk-yuk.

Hey Geo whats a CH look like through your scope, does it show the open stream or does it have a solid appearance. I have a friend that has a solar filter on his, not anywhere as nice as your scope, but the CH appear solid yet you can easily see the SS?

Hello, Sonic, a coronal hole is by definition just a hole in the corona (sol's upper atmosphere). I believe the hydrogen-alpha scopes just image the photosphere, so no holes can be seen (hopefully). I've become a great proponent of the h-alpha scopes for their excellent views of filaments (better than SDO!) and the GONG network specifically for their 1-minute updates which clearly show flares (away from the limb anyway). Special imaging, like the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager or the AIA instrument aboard SDO are best to view CH's. Peace, Sol-Brother.

The 'pros' over at NOAA and Lockheed must be on August holiday.

Lockheed hasn't corrected their obvious gaffe of 1808 in their flare list and NOAA seems to have missed the huge filament liftoff entirely and their G1 storm watch has fizzled again. I think they're phoning it in from some sandy beach while soaking up that last bit of Global Warming, hahaha. Maybe our spaceweather services should be outsourced to a Chinese forced-labor camp where a bad prediction will cost you a kidney.....LOLLOLLOL.

HUGE FILAMENT LIFTOFF-
:8/14-erupt:

NOAA-Solar Activity

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was at low levels. The largest event of the period, a C4
flare, came from old Region 1809 (now two days around the west limb).

Region 1818 (S07E07) a Dhc/beta, produced a couple of low-level
C-flares, but showed signs magnetic simplification and decay. Region
1817 (S22W19) an Esc/beta, maintained a horizontal shear line, but also
showed signs of simplification. New Region 1821 (N01W22) was numbered
today as it developed, but was simple and largely inactive. No
Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed during the period.

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM-

Incredible slideshow of the Chinese space program which is on track to eclipse NASA/ESA and the Russians within 20 years.

"China had become the third country in history to send a manned vessel into space. Since then, China has sent a total of five manned missions into orbit, including June's 15-day Shenzhou X mission, the country's longest to date. During the mission, three astronauts conducted automatic and manually controlled dockings with an orbiting module. These are crucial steps in establishing a permanent space station, which China hopes will replace its current small orbiting module by 2020. (snip)

Hickman writes for Foreign Policy, there "are unmistakable warning signs that China may surpass the United States and Russia to become the world's preeminent spacefaring power."

Don't 'duh' me, friend. You had me frantically DuckDuckGo-ing for info on 'quantum chromodynamics' the other day, hehe. I thought for sure you were making shit up, but I learned something new. Thank you, shadasonic.

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

We're all learning from each other here and soon our 'hive mind' will surpass NOAA and NASA; hopefully we'll catch up with China and India too. I'm only 2 1/2 years into this solar stuff and I admittedly have huge gaps in my knowledge of physics (especially all the X's & 0's involved in Einsteinian equations). But, like most everyone here, I have an insatiable curiosity and a rebellious streak of independent thinking.

I spent the morning today researching SOLAR SECTOR BOUNDARY CROSSINGS in expectation of NOAA's predicted disturbance. The disturbance never happened, so I never posted my findings; but shit, I did learn a whole lot I didn't know yesterday. Here's a few links of papers and such for anyone interested:

MORE MILITARY- INDUSTRIAL INSANITY-wtf

Forgotten Cold War Plan To Put A Ring Around Planet Earth-

During the summer of 1963, Earth looked a tiny bit like Saturn.

The same year that Martin Luther King, Jr. marched on Washington and Beatlemania was born, the United States launched half a billion whisker-thin copper wires into orbit in an attempt to install a ring around the Earth. It was called Project West Ford, and it’s a perfect, if odd, example of the Cold War paranoia and military mentality at work in America’s early space program.

A potential solution was born in 1958 at MIT’s Lincoln Labs, a research station on Hanscom Air Force Base northwest of Boston. Project Needles, as it was originally known, was Walter E. Morrow’s idea. He suggested that if Earth possessed a permanent radio reflector in the form of an orbiting ring of copper threads, America’s long-range communications would be immune from solar disturbances and out of reach of nefarious Soviet plots.

The ultimate fate of the West Ford needles is also surrounded by a cloud of uncertainty. Because the copper wires were so light, project leaders assumed that they would re-enter the atmosphere within several years, pushed Earthward by solar wind. Most of the needles from the failed 1961 and successful 1963 launch likely met this fate. Many now lie beneath snow at the poles.

But not all the needles returned to Earth. Thanks to a design flaw, it’s possible that several hundred, perhaps thousands of clusters of clumped needles still reside in orbit around Earth, along with the spacecraft that carried them.

You gotta check this out:
