Tainted baby wipes problem suggests a much larger problem.....PG
Almost ALL baby wipes contain PROPYLENE GLYCOL which acts to break down the cell structure of skin and nervous structure even deeper. Rather than blaming a bacteria solely for the infection problems, likely also to blame is the overuse of propylene glycol in too many skin products causing a general breakdown of skin defenses!

If you use baby wipes on a cut, regardless of other bacteria present, the PG in them will act to expand the cut and any infection because PG attacks skin.

Re: Tainted baby wipes problem suggests a much larger problem.....PG
A possible scenario here is:

You are likely to find a myriad of bacterias which you could blame this outbreak on. With any sample you can find these kinds of things, but the body is supposed to be able to fight these things off, but ONLY if you are not disrupting skin defenses. Unfortunely, the main ingredient next to water in baby wipes happens to be one that ATTACKS the skin. (Propylene Glycol)

How can this be allowed?

Why are they using a known nervous and renal system attacker as a main ingredient in baby wipes. It's incredible!

Where are you getting your information from?

I work at a chemical company, and am looking at the msds for propylene glycol right now, here are the health effects:

Inhalation:
No adverse health effects via inhalation.
Ingestion:
Relatively non-toxic. Ingestion of sizable amount (over 100ml) may cause some gastrointestinal upset and temporary central nervous system depression. Effects appear more severe in individuals with kidney problems.
Skin Contact:
Mild irritant and defatting agent, especially on prolonged contact.
Eye Contact:
May cause transitory stinging and tearing.
Chronic Exposure:
Lactic acidosis, stupor and seizures have been reported following chronic ingestion.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Kidney disorders.

"temporary central nervous system depression. Effects appear more severe in individuals with kidney problems."

Baby wipes are OVERUSED so you are introducing a LARGE AMOUNT OF RENAL ATTACKING SUBSTANCES into your body.

This is why they also adversely affect the kidneys.

This is the main ingredient in ANTIFREEZE which is a severe kidney attacker.

Exactly, this is not something that should be used over and over again on a human body, long-term use, which is common with baby wipes, will cause nervous and renal disorders.

I use cloth and water, sometimes a little olive oil for the big messes on all my babies. My youngest never had a diaper rash - ever.

Ok, try this one on for size... isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) has been demonstrated to be one of the few factors with a near 100% correlation with cancer, that is to say, almost all cancerous tissues show some degree of isopropyl rubbing alcohol in them.

What's one of the most common personal product ingredients? charlie

What product have they recently begun to promote within the past 10 years as good hand hygiene? charlie

Rubbing alcohol based hand santizer. charlie

dude, where are you getting this from?

most anti-freeze uses etyhlene glycol, which can cause acute kidney failure.

propylene glycol is much less toxic, which is why it is used in any anti-freeze that could accidentally get ingested (food processors etc), since it is only a skin irritant.

The point is that the baby wipes containing PG are most likely causing a breakdown in the immune system of babies' skin due to disruption of cell membranes from over-use. Remember the skin is the largest organ of the immune system. ;)

I think he's right, personally... along with the use of "anti-bacterial" products that do not allow the individuals' biosphere (a loose term for the host body as well as all the microorganisms that sustain it) to properly develop with and on their bodies.

Properties

Propylene glycol is a component in newer automotive antifreezes and de-icers used at airports. Like ethylene glycol, the freezing point of propylene glycol is depressed when mixed with water due to disruption of hydrogen bonding. Unlike ethylene glycol, propylene glycol is of very low toxicity. Both are readily biodegradable.

It's lower is toxicity, but overuse is extremely common, so the effects build up with everyday use.

As PG literature admits that it is indeed toxic. As a main ingredient in many skin products we are getting overdosed by it.

Re: Tainted baby wipes problem suggests a much larger problem.....PG
A family member of mine knows from direct experience.

She used "Mint Bliss" by Mary Kay on her lower legs for 3 weeks. Mint Bliss contains: Water and then Propylene Glycol and the 2nd ingredient.

Her legs EXACTLY WHERE SHE WAS APPLYING MINT BLISS began to go numb after three weeks of use of the product. She started having trouble walking at this point.

She discontinued use of Mint Bliss and her legs began to return to normal.

Initially, PG causes a "tingling" effect, but once the outer skin layers are desensitized, one must use more and more of the product to get the tingly sensation, this causes deeper and deeper skin damage and eventually numbs the nervous system and reaches the renal system.

Any type of "Icy Hot" or product like this that causes "tingly" feel, will have PG at the top of ingredients. It's a trick. It is DESENSITIZING your nervous system to make you think you are getting SOOTHING RELIEF, but it's actually just killing your nervous system.
