Re: College should be FREE in the United States -- otherwise, society (that means YOU) is a FREELOADER
College is vastly overrated and oversold. A genius without a degree is still a genius; a dumbass with a degree is still a dumbass. If I had to do it over again I wouldn't have wasted so much time and money on college.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1208743

Why do people with university degrees do on average far better than those without? Why are places with large numbers of college educated people have much better GDP, and are the places that subsidize the lesser performing places in America?

Re: College should be FREE in the United States -- otherwise, society (that means YOU) is a FREELOADER
You can already give yourself a free education at the library and on the internet. If you apply yourself it could be vastly superior to what you would get at a university. Sure, you don't get a degree at the end, but only employers care about that and if you're self-driven enough to educate yourself this way, you really should start your own business.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1208743

Are you retarded? The highly sophisticated, technologically advanced world you benefit from, and which has made the U.S. a super-power, requires HIGHLY educated people with very sophisticated [and expensive] specialty degrees. There's a reason ALL the 'Poor' parts of the U.S., the have not states that traditionally get more from the federal government than they give, have high numbers of poorly performing schools, large drop out rates, low educational achievement, lower than average GDP, etc., are the way they are.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1289217

I might have believed that drivel in the 90's when I was in high school. Now I just think you're full of shit. Self-education is the only real education there is. I have two college degrees and they might as well be toilet paper.

Because they are established from a time when there was a need for it...now these people you refer to have children graduated from college and still living at home in their late twenties and thirties working minimum wage jobs...

Why do you assume that just because people make more money, they are "doing better?" GDP doesn't mean shit to me. I'm much happier living a simple life focused on the things that matter most to me. Degrees only matter to employers, something I have no need for anymore.

Re: College should be FREE in the United States -- otherwise, society (that means YOU) is a FREELOADER
Many European countries offer free tuition to attend college. Why isn't the U.S. doing this? I suppose it's like every other area -- we are SO backwards in medical care funding, punishment of criminals, schools/education. Another thread here brought up the fact that student loan debt has jumped to $900 billion. America prides itself, wrongly, on being a "1st world" nation but acts like a third world gang when it comes to education. America, you're a prideful bunch of dumbasses for allowing this to happen. You forgive foreign nations their debts to us but charge tuition to those who want to "better" themselves and then charge interest on top of that. It isn't any wonder so many around the world look at us as a backward, redneck country, getting worse all the time.
 Quoting: Free Spirit

Who pays for it all...uhhh...someone else.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis could rear its ugly head this weekend.
So far this year, investors have been pretty relaxed about the PIIGS—debt-ridden Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain—because the market believes Europe’s politicians will deliver a "grand solution".

What lazy people. Get off your ass and work for something. You have 12 years of free public education. If you want to go to college and your parents can't afford it, you pay your way like I did. Work and go to school. You can do it if you want it. You sound like a free loader to me. Does someone wipe your ass for you, too?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 436543

You sound like most who have posted here -- self righteous and, well, stupid. FYI, I have a BA and a law degree. I don't need this, but others do. The word "free loader" is typical of the rank ignorance in this country and an example why we're looked upon, and rightly so, as a backwards, 18th century thinking nation. The fact is, take away the fake war on terror, the extremely bloated defense budget and the welfare that accompanies that, and there would be money for free tuition. You, in fact, are the free loader. You benefit from the education of others -- the computer you are on, for example -- and you expect to get that for nothing. You essentially want something for nothing in return.

The U.S. has been supporting the lazy -- i.e. corporations, businesses, etc. -- for the past 100+ years. These entities want something for nothing. They send our young to die and suffer in a contrived war over and over, and the money required to fund such operations is staggering. The burden is because we are constantly propping up those who destroy, not those who learn and are able to build.

or

"College should be a part of the United States deficit"

Being a college student, I can tell you that anything you learn in college can be learned off the internet or by renting library books for FREE.

Education is almost free in America.
You just need the money to afford internet access and a library card.

ONE MORE TIME: Will those who complain about individual freeloaders on welfare, social security, etc., also admit corporate welfare, crony Corpocracy capitalism, and ridiculous subsides in agriculture, and so-on also needs to be abolished? I agree with you on many individuals, but am also adamant corporate welfare, bailouts, subsidies, the MASSIVE military/industrial complex, etc., also is bad and needs to end.

And lobbyist need to be brought under STRICT control and greatly reduced from their current numbers.

I think these liberal arts degrees should be free. Most of them are payed for by loans that will probably never be payed back when you take into account compounding interest.

I have an unsettling feeling liberal arts degrees are a joke and you have almost no chance to find a career that pays well enough to justify the cost of the degree nowadays in America. I could be wrong because I've never "earned" a "higher education" credit, but I have a feeling this is how it is and we will see riots because of it here in the USA. It has already happened in other countries.

Most people don't need an advanced education to pursue their goals in life. For most people, the internet and library is a better alternative to college. Besides, there's no such thing as "real life" in the objective sense. We all create our own reality via our consciousness. That's something they won't teach you about in college. For the self-employed such as myself, college is a waste of time because nobody cares if I have a degree or not.

If you want a "FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION" ... just log online to MIT (Massachusettes Institute of Technology), which happens to be one of the very best schools in the US.

ALL THEIR COURSES ARE ONLINE FOR FREE!!

You will NOT get a Diploma ... but you can GET THE KNOWLEDGE FOR FREE!!

If you are meaning that the Taxpayers should subsidize you on a 4 year vacation ... THEN YOU ARE MERELY A COMMITTED SOCIALIST who believes in taking from the producer class and distributing to the non-producer class.

Nothing is free. The government would take money from people who earned to give you "free" stuff. Then the government would take over the University education system and turn it into the equivalent of the public school system in the US. Socialism is poison.

In whatever way you get a College Education, you will never get the kind of education Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln got on their own. You will get overspecialized Rockefeller-Rothschild crap.
"With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things." William Wordsworth

And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

John F. Kennedy Inaugural Address

Lincoln's economic advisor Henry C. Carey explained the universal issue in his 1851 Harmony of Interests:

"Two systems are before the world.... One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other to increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization. One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace. One is the English system; the other ... the American system, for ... elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world."

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Albert Einstein

Many European countries offer free tuition to attend college. Why isn't the U.S. doing this? I suppose it's like every other area -- we are SO backwards in medical care funding, punishment of criminals, schools/education. Another thread here brought up the fact that student loan debt has jumped to $900 billion.
