Re: Does anyone else HATE working in offices???
To be honest,,, I LOVE my "office:. Mine is on a datacenter floor. I have NO contact with anyone and I do not go "visiting" like the others here. I sit here,,, do what I want and take care of my business.

NO ONE BOTHERS ME

Low profile,, don't participate in gossip or rumors

I also work all the OT I can. So I am here a lot more than anyone.

But I don't do the normal office BS. Fuck the lunches out, the pizza parties,, drinks with the boss.

I come in,,, do my job and split

Sorry about all the "cubies" out there.

peace

That's pretty much how I feel. I have been in an office for 15 years. I don't participate in the office activities. I get along with everyone just fine, but just don't care to hang out with them outside of work. As much as I would rather be outside, my office is full of windows I can open, a fireplace, and I get to have my maple candle, lol. No one really bothers me all that much, I pretty much just do my job and hang out on GLP :).

Re: Does anyone else HATE working in offices???
I'm a 27 year old accountant who's been working for 4 years and it's finally dawned on me that I can't stand working in an office environment! I was laid off from my first job last year and now I'm working in a government office (as an accountant), and it sucks just as much as my old job.

I hate the stupid rules we have to put up with, the gossip, the kissing up, ACTING FAKE ALL THE TIME. I feel like I go into work every day as an ACTOR, 8 hours a day 40 hours a week. The fake smiles, the cheesy "how was your weekend," "how is your wife's new baby doing", the constant small talk about what restaurant you like to eat at, the latest reality tv moron, etc. etc. GAGGGG!!!!!!!!

It just SUCKS!!! What kind of job should I get where I don't have to put up with that bullshit anymore?? I'm about ready to staple my eyelids shut.

Im a 26 year old accountant, but i am a self employed accountant... i rather love my office... i have a jukebox full of music i like in my office, i only have one employee who does administrative work... outside of tax season i make my own hours as well :)

dunno if you deal with taxation or not but thats what keeps us open and its only a few months of hard work, and the rest of the year it is just bookeeping in a relaxed office environment

LOL, not quite. I work in a law office. It is a very old house, so I am in the old dining room...hence the fireplace.

rant

What is up with the bad air quality in office? Don't they know PEOPLE have to work there 8+ hours a day? They should install a HEPA air filter system too. Hell, I got one of those installed in the central AC of our house and it's great. Also, the carpet, they need to get RID of carpet! It never totally gasses out and those of us with allergies and chemical sensitives it's a nightmare we can't take medication for. Put back in hardwood floors. Make the office fragrance free! Tell workers to take baths and stop smacking on perfume. I can't tell you how many times I have ended up with day long headaches from this.

If you work in outside sales, then you never have to sit in the office all day and every day, cause you are out seeing clients.

I work in an office and i hate every single minute of it. I work with mostly good people but there are a few that are either giant assholes or flat out morons that ruin the entire experience.

I got lucky this year and made 100k profit working my own business at home but I'm afraid it is not a steady business model. Also I'm going to get raped on taxes this year because of it. So i keep my crappy job just to cover my ass. Perhaps I should get some balls and just quit, and really give this home business a chance.

Honestly the best job I ever had was when I was a janitor while I was in college. Nobody to hassle me, easy job, up on my feet walking around most of the time.

My dream is to get a few hundred k saved up so I can buy a nice house and about 50 acres of land to live on. If I can pay cash for some thing like that I could easily get by on 25-30k a year, provided its in an area where your undeveloped land isnt ammered by property taxes.

I tried working in an office-oriented job once. ONCE.

Never again. It sucks.

Re: Does anyone else HATE working in offices???
One thing that the OP did not mention, but I am sure that most office workers can relate to... Someone has always got their God-damned hand out for money. A wedding gift for this person, a baby shower gift for that person, a contribution for flowers because some bitches 135 year old aunt died, etc etc etc. I worked in a bank severel years ago, and the was a weeky occurence. On one occasion you had a ghetto sister who was pregnant with her 3rd out of wedlock kid supplied by a 3rd baby daddy. The branch manager, who was a politically correct zealot insisted that all 23 member of the office contribute $ 30.00 toward the cost of a baby gift for this trash. Many people did not HAVE $30.00 dollars to contribute, as they were working to support their OWN kids. Anyone who did not contribute were chastised, publicly humiliated , and called racist. In the end, it all worked out well- the same manager who insisted on the money for the ghetto sister lost her job when the ghetto sister later accused her of being racist.

A sensible workplace would put a sharp limit on this kind of thing and would have an internal fund for birthday acknowledgement and Christmas bonuses and leave it at that.

What you described sounds truly intolerable to the point of lawsuit material.

I've never done warehouse work but if I was a strong young man it would probably be fun, and brilliant exercise.

Also it is really a shame about the lack of factory work. I bet a lot of factories in history were not the dungeons we make them out to be in our imaginations. Sewing factories were not and are not all Triangle Shirtwaist sweat shops by a long shot.

I bet there are some cool places to work doing production, making unusual or useful things, I can see advantages to factory work, there were situations where it paid better than a lot of other jobs and people took pride in their work.

Apply as a flight attendant. This has its issues too, but there is no office, and you keep changing up your fellow coworkers. If you can't stand them, no prob! Don't see them again for several months or years.

Do accountant work on the side.

the freedom of being a janitor lures me, too. But I am retiring in a year.

Re: Does anyone else HATE working in offices???
I traded a classroom for a cubicle. I'm conflicted at the moment. Neither environment is a perfect match for me.

I miss the ability to open windows in office.
The ventilation sux.
I am sure I am getting asbestos and other carcinogenic fibers in my nose and lungs.
I wish my cube had a door.
I have some freedom and can leave my cube.
I love that I get 20 min breaks and one hour lunch if i choose.
I despise the time card mad dash.
I am nervous in high rise building with elevators.
In an emergency I can do what is best for me and me only. If a fire alarm goes off I'm GONE!

In the classroom I was forced to work within a schedule 1st, 2nd, 3rd, lunch, etc. WITH BELLS RINGING ALL THE TIME.
Basically no breaks, lunch was a rush and stuff session.
I had to maintain 3 classrooms a constant chore.
I got drained by 180 needy souls...
Work went home with me.
No timecard punching.
I did not like being responsible for students in an emergency. I thought of them first.

I felt like shit everyday sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours non stop, despite training for powerlifting and bodybuilding. I'd feel lethargic after work. All the emf's is what part of the problem is, I'm sure. But now that I'm rarely sitting a computer I feel incredible.

Don't count on a good job outside of the office, this is why people are thought to be lazy these days, everyone is getting sick of working at unfulfilling jobs. Some are lazy sure, but others want something more from life than working for someone else, doing activities that ultimately just feel like busy work that doesn't matter.

All jobs require what you and I despise, being fake, bullshitting and putting up with douchebags. In fact anything in the public sector will require this to be successful. Even a career or being a business owner.

I love working in a climate controlled office. I feel sorry for those who have to work outside in all sorts of hot and cold weather. It's almost like being homeless isn't it? My daytime home is the office and I like it that way.

Nearly 40 years of office work and almost all of it sucked. What a waste.

You ever see the great black comedy "Office Space"? Says it all. Here's a SPOILER: at the end the hero becomes a construction worker. I think it's a good decision.
