I live in the suburbs of a large city. Quoting: tomspoerneryou can move tomorrow if you choose to. move to a small town where the people are farmers and start volunteering for everything right away so they trust you meanwhile, sell your house/business/whatever over the phone or not point is, you're never "unable" |

Poor people on welfare will storm the nearest McDonald's, devouring everything in sight. Then they will turn their glocks and weapons on white families in the suburbs. Many will be killed. Children will be thrown off rooftops. If you are lucky, you can move to the countryside where you can harvest wheat. |

Given 10 more years wind could easily supply 25% of the nation's power. [link to www.windpoweringamerica.gov] |

A kerosene heater is a nice backup; Home Depot has a couple of good brands. Small solar battery chargers are nice to have. Solar powered yard lights can be brought inside after dark for extra illumination. Walmart has inexpensive oil lamps. Check out www.Lehmans.com Specializes in NON ELECTRICAL household and farm items. Located in Amish country. Wish I had one of their neat woodburning stoves that keeps the house warm, has a compartment for storing hot water, a big oven as well as burners to cook on. Lehman's sells nonelectric washing machines and all sorts of things that will surprise you. Do everything you can to seal up air leaks in your house and add attic insulation if possible. Generators are nice to have but in a SHTF situation, they only make you a target unless you can soundproof it. And you will run out of gas. Try to find someone in your area that makes or knows how to make biodisel fuel. Start collecting hand tools that will do the job your power tools do now. |

The Electrical Grid is considered to be the SINGLE-MOST important invention of the 20th Century. From cooking, to information and driving, shuttling the simple Electron from Point A to Point B affects our lives in more ways than nearly anyone born in the 20th Century and beyond can POSSIBLY fathom. Survival without a Power Grid is possible, but the longer you do it, the more life will be painful. Try going through a summer in any Southern State without Air Conditioning. It's possible ... but MAN does it SUCK. . |

Any failures in the grid will be fixed quickly. Wind and hydro power are 'always on' and the efficient interstate system will ensure that resources get where they need to be in a timely manner. I just don't see all this collapsing. Maybe we'll see shortages of certain exotic foods but electricity? Well not around here. And STAY OUT! Don't come flocking here when your electricity goes out in whatever huge metro area you live in. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1266813In the event of a CME that causes transformers to explode on any large widespread scale, it will be YEARS before the grid is restored for the general public. There are not a bunch of extra transformers in storage and the few that are will be grabbed by the govt & the military. Transformers are not manufactured in this country and I remember hearing something about a 2 year wait. Hospitals, water treatment facilities, and other critical infastructure will be fixed first before residential neighborhoods. |
