Survival Without a Power Grid
I'd like to use this thread to discuss life without a power grid. As most here know, there are several scenarios floating around concerning astronomical events about to occur. I am in the process of storing food and water but there are other issues that need discussion.

A friend of mine is a detective and he says that when the power grid goes down after people realize this is not a temporary thing lasting only a few hours, there will begin rioting in the streets. Several weeks later, hungry and thirsty people will begin getting desperate and if they have weapons, they may kill anyone standing in the way of them getting food and water.

Because of this reality I have also bought a few weapons to protect my family. Because of the late date of my realization of upcoming events, I probably will be unable to move. I live in the suburbs of a large city. Although there are still fields around, there are plenty of people living around here. My detective friend told me if I buy a solar and/or wind generator, this will be visible to others and it would be like putting a target on my house. Not only that, my homeowners association reports they would probably deny putting up solar panels and/or wind turbines in my house.

Now I have to look at other ways to heat my home and generate at least some electricity in the event of power grid failure. What do people suggest for people like me for next winter when there may not be electricity?

you can move tomorrow if you choose to.

move to a small town where the people are farmers and start volunteering for everything right away so they trust you

meanwhile, sell your house/business/whatever over the phone

or not

point is, you're never "unable"

It will be hard in the cities.

Poor people on welfare will storm the nearest McDonald's, devouring everything in sight.

Then they will turn their glocks and weapons on white families in the suburbs.

Many will be killed. Children will be thrown off rooftops.

If you are lucky, you can move to the countryside where you can harvest wheat.

what kind of crises are we talking about?.. diff situation requires diff preparation?

if tectonic plates are dancing around - will your bunker just disappear into the belly of the earth?

are we talking abt riots which will blow over in 3 days or are we talking abt end-of-the-world scenarios?

Re: Survival Without a Power Grid
grid will never go down at least around here where I live. I just don't see it ever happening unless all the power lines everywhere are bombed purposely and that would just be a stupid thing to do.

Here in my state (South Dakota) half the power already comes from hydroelectric dams, and the other hand is quickly being filled in by wind power.. these windmills are going up EVERYWHERE and there's huge amounts of untapped potential here. Given 10 more years wind could easily supply 25% of the nation's power.

Re: Survival Without a Power Grid
Do a search for 'alternative energy' or 'off grid living'

Harbor Freight has a small woodburning stove for around $100 plus cost of pipes, installation. A kerosene heater is a nice backup; Home Depot has a couple of good brands.

Small solar battery chargers are nice to have. Solar powered yard lights can be brought inside after dark for extra illumination. Walmart has inexpensive oil lamps.

Check out www.Lehmans.com Specializes in NON ELECTRICAL household and farm items. Located in Amish country. Wish I had one of their neat woodburning stoves that keeps the house warm, has a compartment for storing hot water, a big oven as well as burners to cook on.
Lehman's sells nonelectric washing machines and all sorts of things that will surprise you.

Do everything you can to seal up air leaks in your house and add attic insulation if possible.

Generators are nice to have but in a SHTF situation, they only make you a target unless you can soundproof it. And you will run out of gas.

Try to find someone in your area that makes or knows how to make biodisel fuel.

Start collecting hand tools that will do the job your power tools do now.

.

The Electrical Grid is considered to be the SINGLE-MOST
important invention of the 20th Century.

From cooking, to information and driving, shuttling the
simple Electron from Point A to Point B affects our lives
in more ways than nearly anyone born in the 20th Century
and beyond can POSSIBLY fathom.

Survival without a Power Grid is possible, but the longer
you do it, the more life will be painful.

Try going through a summer in any Southern State without Air Conditioning.

It's possible ... but MAN does it SUCK.

human beings are hardworking, innovative, and industrious. Any failures in the grid will be fixed quickly. Wind and hydro power are 'always on' and the efficient interstate system will ensure that resources get where they need to be in a timely manner. I just don't see all this collapsing. Maybe we'll see shortages of certain exotic foods but electricity? Well not around here. And STAY OUT! Don't come flocking here when your electricity goes out in whatever huge metro area you live in. chuckle

In the event of a CME that causes transformers to explode on any large widespread scale, it will be YEARS before the grid is restored for the general public. There are not a bunch of extra transformers in storage and the few that are will be grabbed by the govt & the military. Transformers are not manufactured in this country and I remember hearing something about a 2 year wait. Hospitals, water treatment facilities, and other critical infastructure will be fixed first before residential neighborhoods.

Re: Survival Without a Power Grid
Many are predicting that the grid will be out months in the event of a class X strong solar flare that hits dead on. Already this solar season there have been two class x flares. Thank goodness they were not aimed toward earth. You may forget about 5-10 years ago when they had a cascading failure where half the country lost its power grid.

That's why it's important to know how to hunt, fish and grow food and how to preserve it without refridgeration.
A big enough CME will fry everything with electronics if not properly shielded including your car if it's not from the 60's
