right now, the Prevailing winds are blowing West to East... out to sea, toward US.

As summer warms the Sea of Japan, it swirls around, and then blows East to West (toward the Asian mainland-- Koreas and China).

Yes. In the US, a program called RASCAL (Radiological Assessment System for Consequence Analysis) is used - Japan would use it or something similar.

Plug in the source terms, meteorological conditions and it will crank out a pretty good projection of where stuff goes and where people should leave, shelter or do nothing.

I reckon an 'after shock' has a very good chance of blowing that containment building wide open with that internal pressure sitting behind it.

Sounds just like that made for tv movie atomic twister - tornado instead of earthquake but loss of power caused inability to pump in cooling water - till zack from Saved by the Bell saves the day by hijacking a gas truck for the backup pump

I was watching the Prez. speak a bit ago...
I think the timing of the speech is unusual if there isn't bad stuff happening behind the scenes, on a couple of fronts.
The way he avoided really answering questions about what is happening with this reactor...if all is going well, why not say more than just 'Our people are in contact with theirs", and 'We're there to help"?
I also found it strange that suddenly he's out talking about how we have enough oil , not to panic about supplies ( Does he know something we don't about the ME?)
Also noticed when he was talking about energy alternatives, Nuclear was moved to the very last thing mentioned.( used to be that it was the 'best ' way to get around the energy problem...now it's last?!)
It straight up gave me the creeps watching it...
There is something really bad happening there...

That IS the most user-friendly of the bunch :D

There are places that run this stuff for a living, and they will have maps out showing the projected paths of any plumes. At least they would in the US. No idea what the equivalent Japanese resources are, but suspect they have something similar.

Without knowing the source terms, any simulations are useless.

Underscoring grave concerns about the Fukushima plant some 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. air force had delivered coolant to avert a rise in the temperature of the facility's nuclear rods.

Tokyo Electric Power Co said pressure inside a reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi plant rose after the cooling system was knocked out by the earthquake, the largest on record in Japan.

Kyodo news agency quoted the company as saying that the radiation level was rising in the turbine building and the pressure had risen to 1.5 times the designed capacity.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1279459

I was watching Headline News and noone in the Air Force or Pentagon can confirm that they delivered any type of coolant .... hummmm

Besides isn't the coolant for a reactor ..... water?? So if this is true the Air Force delivered water....

I wonder if it was bottled???

wtf

Japan trade ministry: Pressure inside Fukushima reactor may have risen to 2.1 times designed capacity

If they're bringing in coolant it's not water but likely boron for a last ditch effort to flood the reactor.

Initially I was optimistic that they would be able to provide the needed water to cool down the fuel rods....however, now I really think the reactor is going to meltdown or blow- take your pick.

what if they just rule it a lost cause - cant they contain it or encapsulate it before it blows? or implode it somehow?
