Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1290825Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said a major radioactive disaster was unlikely. “No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction,” he said. “Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3km radius.” An hour ago, the government expanded the evacuation area from 3km to 10km. And "loss of coolant will stop the reaction"???? What brand of sake has Professor Sekimura been drinking? Without water to bounce off of and back into the fuel to create more fission, the reaction does actually slow down |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1292270ah, it was a long time ago in Amarillo, Texas. someone dropped an industrial sized wrench on a winch onto the cone of nuke bomb and it cracked. people died immediately. other people got sick and died eventually. it was covered up. 10,000 people and the Baptist preacher tried to get justice. so many kids in that area got leukemia. we left town within two hours. 3 women, 4 dogs, 4 kids, 2 cats. all crammed in a station wagon. left all our Stuff. didn't care. glad to just save our lives. gay guys two doors left town at the same time, too. seems we were the only people in that area who immediately Got It. snow on the ground and 20 below, but it felt like it was 120 degrees. sweat running down our bodies, our clothes soaked. burning. we felt as if we were burning alive. the air felt like hate. unbelievable hate. hit 50 miles out, and Yes . . . it dropped off. no more unmitigated hate no more burning. remember that. 50 miles. 100 miles Even Better. really gone. green pus came out of our eyes, our kids and pets eyes for months. we coughed and coughed and coughed green crap for months. sick, weak. herbs. food. rest. love. holding together. so sick. there is more. can't say. sad memory. green pus coming out of you eyes was it, and you coughed up some green stuff did you and some herbs helped, hey, did you sing Kum ba Ya as well? for months and months and want to lay down and die so sick. weak like a newborn. your compassion is great. i took those herbs for years and years. i got lumps. i had almost all of my white cells destroyed. i have no immune system pretty much. like a person with AIDS. no immunity. let's see pneumonia, pneumonia, pneumonia, flu, flu, flu, meningitis, colds, bronchitis, wrecked health. get it? for like about 35 years now. your compassion is great. has some sense. So, what happened to the rest of your family. And can you share more? I mean, it's been 35 years...like, what happened to all the poeple who stayed in that little town? what happened to the town? you can look it up on the net probably. just type in Pantex accident. you may not get the whole story, but enough. lots of kids died from leukemia and adults from cancers. but Amarillo is still there, and Pantex closed down. |

I don't have specific knowledge of light water reactors, but according to Wikipedia that's just a normal reactor. Within the class of light water reactors, this is an old-style Boiling Water Reactor. Loss of coolant stop the reaction? Not to my knowledge. . Anonymous Coward User ID: 1290825 United States 03/12/2011 12:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The use of water as a moderator is an important safety feature of PWRs, as any increase in temperature causes the water to expand and become less dense; thereby reducing the extent to which neutrons are slowed down and hence reducing the reactivity in the reactor. Therefore, if reactivity increases beyond normal, the reduced moderation of neutrons will cause the chain reaction to slow down, producing less heat. This property, known as the negative temperature coefficient of reactivity, makes PWR reactors very stable. In event of a loss of coolant accident, the moderator is also lost and the reaction will stop. I don't know crap about this, but that is two sources saying the same thing. Never heard this before. |
