Dry Cat Food - A cheap way to store protein?
I'm looking for opinions on whether or not dry cat food should be considered as part of a food storage program. High-quality dry cat food cost about $3/lb and if stored in an air-tight container, should stay good for a year or more.

Heh, I wouldn't eat most brands, I don't think. However my cat has Innova Evo which uses human grade meat only, I might give that a try if in an emergency. Then the cat wouldnt have anything to eat, so might as well eat that too...

Yeah, I'd really worry about Mad Cow disease, although if it's a choice between maybe that and certain starvation, I'd go with the risk.

Really though you would be better off eating beans for protein. I think it would be price competitive with cat food and not disgusting.

Buy beans and rice. Any dry pet food will go rancid.

Re: Dry Cat Food - A cheap way to store protein?
I can't imagine trying to convince my family to eat it. Regardless, are you certain it's the best way to store up the essential amino acids that you need? Here's a link which also includes the WHO daily requirement amounts: [link to en.wikipedia.org]

Lentils are cheap, but would have to be mixed with rice. No matter what variety will greatly assist you with getting over the inevitable complaining.

Protein powder is not that expensive, and can be blended with other ingredients too to boost the nutritional components of the meal. For example, you could blend that with some cans of fruit or oatmeal to make a pretty cheap meal. TVP is another way to go.

There are two main kinds of vitamins: water and fat soluble. In other words, you need to add fat in the meal in order to ensure that your family is getting enough Vitamin A,D,E, and K. I'd ensure that those Vitamins as well as the water soluble ones are present. Essential trace minerals may be absent too in the kitty food. You'd have to ensure that no matter what that the kinds of vitamins and minerals are biologically available for humans.

All in all, I think it's a bad idea. There are enough free pdfs available out there that explain how to best create a food prep list for emergencies. Why not use them? There are a ton of Latter Day Saints sources like this one: [link to www.providentliving.org]

Good luck

Re: Dry Cat Food - A cheap way to store protein?
most likely ounce per ounce a good whey protein mix would be a better choice--the kind that 1 scoop gives 20-24 gms of good clean complete protein/essential amino acids for humans etc and there's usually 28 servings per cannister--
you won't get this amount via kitty chow,
and these whey proteins don't have to break the bank either-
scan around the web or even locally for sales...and if you're not skeeved by expiration dates, put them away/sealed and we've had no problems with some a year past the recommended date
been using them for years insted of the instant breakfast shite or those obnoxious canned protein shakes and again.they are CHEAPER.

It gets moldy after a while. Corn and other grains used are those deemed not fit for human consumption, so they sell it to the pet food industry. It's usually moldy or rat infested to begin with. The greasy fats on it are rancid. It's not fit for a cat let alone a human. But you only expect your cat to live 10 years or so. Is that how long you want to live? Your healthy cat should live over 20 years.

The "flavors" on it are made from road kill. "By products" can include dead pets with their flea collars still on with all the pesticides still intact, plus diseased and euthanized animals from animal shelters. Not fit food for any animal, let alone a human.

Ground up raw foods like Foster Farms chicken thighs with taurine, raw egg yolk, iodine, vitamins E and B and fish oils are best for cats. I slave over the hot grinder for my kitties.

DOESN'T ANYBODY REMEMBER THE PET FOOD SCANDAL/PROBLEMS A FEW YEARS BACK???

The pet food companies are STILL importing their cheap grains from China. And now it is probably radiated from Japan.

Big scandal bag in 2007. These bastards are cutting pet food with all kinds of inorganic, inedible junk to increase profits.

Re: Dry Cat Food - A cheap way to store protein?
Fat content is too high, plus animal grade food allows far much more interesting stuff than human grade food. Insects, insect poo, hair of whatever meat animal is being used, skin of cattle (minor scrapes, most of the skin is removed to make leather), ground bone, organs, you know lips to assholes with little meaty meat in there.

Of course there is rumor that horse is used in animal foods.

You are safer getting a can of spam, or canned chili or canned stew (Ew to all of those in my opinion).

Having beans and Rice makes for a complete protein.

Re: Dry Cat Food - A cheap way to store protein?
you'd be better off making your own recipe and vacuum nitro/ packing it

the possibilities are endless- bars, rehydrated grilled/ cooked food. its really about preserving the fat, which goes rancid, by clarifying it.
