wait a sec - kyodo is the NEWS org, not a nuclear plant?

here's the quote from Kyodo news:

"NEWS ADVISORY: 6th reactor at Fukushima nuke plant loses cooling functions "

I understood only three of the six reactors were online? what is this about "sixth reactor loses cooling"?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1293190

Is this 6th one at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant #1, or on of the reactors at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant #2?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1144159

I don't know why a "sixth" reactor was mentioned in that release.

So far the only know problems, announced problems, are with the three reactors at Fukushima Daiichi (also know as Fukushima Plant No. 1). Three of the six reactors seem to have been offline during the quake for maintenance, but there is obviously still some confusion about this.

I have not heard a single report regarding Fukushima Plant No. 2 down the coast a little, also known as Fukushima Daini. There are 4 more reactors there.

CNN talking head saying - wolf blitzer confirming - a reactor at another site with cooling problems. Either I missed the plant name or they didn't give it out.

I believe he is talking about Daini now having problems too. sigh

Anyone care to post a map of these two Fukushima Nuclear Power Plants? There are two of them, both have multiple reactors.

Anyone got a map? Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant #1 is about 5KM "north" of Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant #2. Both have multiple reactors.

Are there a Google Earth -- Japan maps of these two sites? Or are they 'blurred out'?

quake location was between the two Fukushima power plants and the Onagawa power plant which according to wikipedia had a fire in a turbine immediately after the quake. My research shows only one reactor was operational at Onagawa.

Also down the coast is Tokai Daini with no reports, status unknown.

So there's Ten reactors total between Fukushima Dailchi and Fukushima Daini? Or is the total only Seven?

As in 3 at Fukushima Dailchi and 4 at Fukushima Daini?

ten total, 6 at Daiichi and 4 at Daini

plus one more at Onagawa (not mentioned as having problems so far except for the aforementioned fire)

it is my understanding 3 of the 6 reactors at Daiichi were offline for maintenance at the time of the quake, but this is uncertain.

Reactor #1 at Plant #1 (Fukushima Dailchi) appears to have been at the end of its licensed operational life span, as it went online first criticality Operable. Initial criticality: 10/1970. Commercial start: 03/1971.
... according to [link to www.nirs.org]

"DETERIORATION OF BWR SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS

It is becoming increasingly clear that the aging of reactor components poses serious economic and safety risks at BWRs. A report by NRC published in 1993 confirmed that age-related degradation in BWRs will damage or destroy many vital safety-related components inside the reactor vessel before the forty year license expires. The NRC report states "Failure of internals could create conditions that may challenge the integrity the reactor primary containment systems." The study looked at major components in the reactor vessel and found that safety-related parts were vulnerable to failure as the result of the deterioration of susceptible materials (Type 304 stainless steel ) due to chronic radiation exposure, heat, fatigue, and corrosive chemistry. One such safety-related component is the core shroud and it is also an indicator of cracking in other vital components through the reactor made of the same material."

The 1970-1971 to 2011 is in the range of that 40 years as advised above. Reactor #1 at Plant #1 (Fukushima Dailchi) is the oldest reactor of those Ten.

This sorta rings --- from M.R. @ WRH:

"I have to wonder if we would be facing this crisis if the International Atomic Energy Agency had focused on inspecting the safety of the very real power stations of the world instead of wasting all their time and resources trying to find the fantasy nuclear weapons of Iraq and Iran."

OK the only chance I see for controlling a run away reaction is using a small tactical hydrogen bomb after it melts eep enough into the earths crust, but would that cause another release of pressure Android cause another earthquake...the alternative is doom or you can go with plan B which is doom, your choice.

Oh but they've been telling us all along that the reactor was never breached.

Try again.

Herein lies the problem with official gove't lies... They get caught by them eventually. They can't have it both ways here.

If they are using firetrucks, that core and fuel material has been exposed to the atmosphere and that is the nightmare scenario.

the Melt down has already occurred. Star Fleet is interceding in controlling the radiation, they have technology that can help.

If the reactor breached... do you have any idea of the heat it would give off? Not only that, but the kill zone for radiation would be growing. I doubt it has breached yet, that is what they are trying to prevent.

Agreed. Which is why I said "try again" to the firetrucks explanation.

I still say the blast damaged all the associated infrastructure related to the mechanical coolant system... so I have no idea how they are getting anything inside there WITHOUT there being a breach.
