yeah, if it was a nuclear explosion you would think it would have been MUCH larger.

Just on CNN a nuclear physicist just said pouring sea water in the reactor is not at all a safety feature and that this is a last ditch effort and will likely fail leading to a larger reactor explosion. This reactor contains plutonium which will be a potential large explosion and greater fall out area.

I never understood why, in a meltdown situation, they don't pour tons and tons of sand on the rods...What does sand do when super heated? It turns to glass and forms a hermetically tight seal...

Great overview.

It's all about heat transfer with the reactor and once those systems are destroyed, what exactly can be done 'on the fly'? Could a temporary system be rigged up where the surrounding seawater be used? Lesser of the two evils and way beyond code I'm sure, but what else can you do in limited time once the site infrastructure has been destroyed?

My brother-in-law just sent me this link regarding the jet stream showing that the high velocity jet stream goes right over the Japanese nuclear plant and then on to the west coast of the USA. He is a retired nuclear scientist and told me to get (the hell) out of northern Calisornia/Southern Oregon ASAP. He has high level professional contacts who are involved with containing the problem in Japan. They called him for advice. He told me it is out of control and only a miracle will keep it from getting worse... much worse. Please know he is a firm believer in the safety of nuclear energy and we have had "discussions" about its safety and need. Good luck to all that read this post.

NOTE- he claims the west coast will be "hit" within 24 hours if the radioactive material gets into the jet stream.

the Melt down has already occurred. Star Fleet is interceding in controlling the radiation, they have technology that can help.

i just think, that if it was the hydrogen that ignited and exploded, the fireball would have been far bigger than what we saw.

what we saw was an initial fireball, all over the walls of the building, then the pressure wave essentially blowing the fire of that initial explosion out.

i'm convinced they blew it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1292909

Why would they?...there's no need to and they wouldn't want to...if it was only to vent it they could have just cut a hole in it..no..it exploded because there was gas built up inside...the containment building is really just a thin sheild anyway...it's an auxillery level of protection...
 Quoting: SHR

i agree about that last point..

but why did the fires of the hydrogen explosion go out then?

what would make it ignite, then go out like that?

unless the explosion we see has NOTHING to do with the release of pressure? two SEPARATE events. one CAUSED the other?

why would the flames of the initial explosion be seen all over the walls of the building, and not appear from the weak point of the building the pressure of the explosion found?

can you see what i'm saying?

oh well, there's nothing I can do about it, whether I 'know', or not, so i'm gonna crack a tinny open.

fuck it!

lol

cheers

As I understand it the main reactor has already been confirmed after the explosion.

The depths of this disaster are astounding. US Naval assets are in route with search and rescue coupled with supplies. They should be begin to appear on the horizon within 24 hours.

Well they are saying it's intact still...if true?...then we aren't at worst case yet...but they also admitted that there has been melting of the fuel...and that's not good...and they only admitted it after the tell tale signs were detected and they were basically cornered into the admission.

I feel for them...they have their hands full...I truly hope they don't have a nuclear disaster that outscales the already horrific disaster they are already going through. To avert that...it's a very delicate and dangerous dance as I said...and an extremely complex one under terrible conditions....we could use some cards to fall our way on this one...
 Quoting: SHR

The issue only compounds the search, rescue and human costs that were already obvious. There are other even more disturbing possibilities depending on the number of dead and the aftermath that may entail.

It's also exponentially harder now to work on stopping the meltdown of the other reactors at the site... now that the entire site's hot.

This is so far from over...

OP REQUEST:

Can you PLEASE verify any of your credentials? The massive amounts of hysteria and mis information are exceedingly difficult to sift through. On this site and elsewhere.

You wrote a concise piece, but what qualifies you to write it? Please. We need WAY more facts right now and the BS level is sky high with fake charts, fear and conjecture.

SHR, please ignore idiots like this who want to see a credential and then believe the information because it came from a "proper authority". Instead keep spending your time putting out information to people so they have a base to start from and can do their own research to check things out and verify.

Thanks again.

No, not gas. Steam.
Steam because I beleive we are in meltdown scenario.
The small amout of cooling water is not near enough to cool the rods.
The steam then vaporized and critical mass was reached.
That's what the detonation was.
CNN just had another "nuclear expert" on.
The guy was obviously lying and scared shitless.

Thanks, much appreciated.

From what you wrote....it sounds as if a meltdown is indeed inevitable.
And most likely all ready happening.

What I am curious about is wether or not the radiation from fallout that
is carried by the jet stream....to us....becomes less dangerous.

Does it weaken? How much?
This was reported on FOX, and I'm wondering if it is just another pet on

At 8:30 last night. CNN had a nulear power expert who worked on Chernoble. The guy started to say "fail", then cought himself and corrected. He was clearly nervous and body language suggested panic.

I am not buying any official lines here, and we could be looking at Chernoble Meltdown Scenario.

Iodine is being handed out.

Chernobyl Radiation Killed Nearly One Million People: New Book

" NEW YORK, New York, April 26, 2010 (ENS) - Nearly one million people around the world died from exposure to radiation released by the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl reactor, finds a new book from the New York Academy of Sciences published today on the 24th anniversary of the meltdown at the Soviet facility.

The book, "Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment," was compiled by authors Alexey Yablokov of the Center for Russian Environmental Policy in Moscow, and Vassily Nesterenko and Alexey Nesterenko of the Institute of Radiation Safety, in Minsk, Belarus.

*

" The authors said, "For the past 23 years, it has been clear that there is a danger greater than nuclear weapons concealed within nuclear power. Emissions from this one reactor exceeded a hundred-fold the radioactive contamination of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

*

" The book explores effects of Chernobyl fallout that arrived above the United States nine days after the disaster. Fallout entered the U.S. environment and food chain through rainfall. Levels of iodine-131 in milk, for example, were seven to 28 times above normal in May and June 1986. The authors found that the highest U.S. radiation levels were recorded in the Pacific Northwest.
