In my opinion the explosion happened because they were aggressively flooding the already near critical core with too much coolant. The hydrogen in the water ignited and that is where it's at.

Probably deciding to let it melt into the earth right now and then "contain" with small hydrogen device placed in the tunnel and exploded to burn out the nuclear fuel after filling and topping off with millions of tons of drilling and heavy cement.

If the reactor breached... do you have any idea of the heat it would give off? Not only that, but the kill zone for radiation would be growing. I doubt it has breached yet, that is what they are trying to prevent.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1293363

At Chernobyl there were people taking video of the bright glow above the reactor that finally blew. One does wonder is a similar glow above the reactor would occur at Reactor #1 Plant #1 just before it went into meltdown.

This entire cascade of events occured predominately because apparently 13 backup disel-electric generators were swamped by the tsunami wave and incapable of being started or kept running. Apparently the site-deign back in 1968-1970 or whenever this site was designed seemed to have ignored that possibility of the back up generators being swamped by tsunami waves. Otherwise perhaps those generators them selves would have been place several stories up from the ground to at least be able to handle even a 50 foot tsunami or perhaps built on much higher ground.

Poor site design back in the late 1960's is perhaps the main culprit of this disaster.

To make it even worse, if that is possible......all roads, rails and airports are out and unusable.

Any special tools or teams that aren't in walking distance won't get there anytime soon.

The Core will melt into the Earth until it hits a magma or water pocket.

If it hits water, a massive steam explosion will eject most of the radioactive burning fission blob up into the upper atmosphere....VERY BAD.

If it hits a magma pocket, new volcanic eruption bringing the radioactive material back up with lava and ash.

Depending on the depth, a water pocket explosion can be VERY Intense and catastrophic.

Ok, somebody point out the flaw in my sand theory...At Chernobyl they used concrete which is retarded, because high temperatures break down concrete to it's basic ingredients, but sand melts to molten mass and with enough layers will form a glass dome that will contain all radiation...

The utility supplier notified the government early Sunday morning that the No. 3 reactor at the No. 1 Fukushima plant had lost the ability to cool the reactor core. The reactor is now in the process of releasing radioactive steam, according to top government spokesman Yukio Edano.

It was the sixth reactor overall at the Fukushima No. 1 and No. 2 plants to undergo cooling failure since the massive earthquake and ensuing tsunami struck Japan on Friday.

One reactor (FUK-1)has blown apart its exterior walls in an explosion. It was initially reported to be venting steam, then an explosion occurred.

A second reactor (FUK-3) is now venting radioactive steam. Will it explode soon like the first?

4 more reactors are in a similar state and will soon follow suit.

the Japanese are experts at measuring radiation levels....

the question is.....

will they report the true levels to the public....

there are also mechanisms for measuring levels in the jetstream.....

there shouldn´t be any doubts....

the problem is the people in charge will not reveal true data to the public...

just as they didn´t reveal it in the BP disaster....

Wrong... the dumped TONS of bags of sand (and lesser amounts of lead and boron) on the reactor at Chernobyl from helicopters in the days after the explosion. The problem they encountered was that the sand created, basically, an oven which retained the heat in the core... causing this molten mess to crack the floor of the reactor room and begin seeping through. This is why there was such an urgency to train all of the water in the basement below the reactor (water from the firefighters hoses). Had it NOT been drained... there would have been a secondary steam explosion much larger than the initial blast.

Now how about an update based on the most recent info that a second one is "unable to cool"?

The point isn't to prevent the floor from failure...the point is to prevent releasing radiation and the molten sand would accomplish that...let it melt into the ground, fine! Maybe it will hit a water pocket and cool and even crack the glass, but a continuous campaign of dumping sand on it would work...hell, they could eventually harness the heat, once stable, and generate power from it...

As comparison... the portion of the Chernobyl #4 reactor core that didn't vaporize in the explosion/fire exceeded (per scientists) 1700 K... or 2600.6 ºF..... drop a large and incredibly dense mass that is 2600º F into cold ground water.... what do you think will happen?

The idea is to keep it from contacting water... put a hot poker into water and it sizzles and makes all kinds of a racket. Consider something MUCH MUCH hotter.. going into something quite chilly.... and that steam will have no where to go... pressure builds and... boom.

Again.. this is all based on my analysis of years of personal interest and research of the Chernobyl disaster and it may not be 100% true... but it sure as hell seems logical to me.
